Question Should I buy a second hand Rexon RXW 12

    Hi all,

I know you must all be tired of "what tablesaw should I buy" type questions, but I live in the north of Queensland where decent secondhand machines are a bit thin on the ground. I'm also in that starting-out phase where I've got a lot of tools to buy.

An 8 yr old Rexon RXW 12 has come up for sale in the local area (well, 3 hours drive away - rather than the 18 hours or so it would take to drive to Brisbane). I can see myself doing a fair bit of work on the tablesaw, so I'd like a reasonably decent one - but I'm prepared to have a starter saw (which is good but not perfect) to begin with before upgrading to something really nice.

(Photo's of the saw in question are attached)

My questions come down to these:

    * Is a RXW 12 an ok saw?
    * Can parts still be found for Rexon saws? There doesn't seem to be any trace of them left anymore, but I believe their products were sold badged with a few other names (Craftsman, Tradesman etc?) Does anyone know an equivalent model number from one of these surviving brands?
    * What's a fair price to pay? The seller has it listed at $900 - which I reckon is waaaay too high (seems there are some very decent new cabinet saw options around for about $1,400 - this Rexon is a Hybrid saw). He's negotiable, but I haven't tried haggling yet. I would have thought around $450 - $500 would be reasonable? (it seems in fairly decent condition from the photos and it's had castors added for moving around the shop).
    * Is owning a 12" saw (rather than a 10") going to be a pain in the neck? (in terms of buying blades, or keeping it accurate, or any other factors I haven't thought of?). Blade-wise I believe this saw has a 1" arbor, rather than the 5/8" that seems the most common with 10" saws. I've read mixed opinions about whether it's sensible to use 10" blades in a 12" machine - but 10" blades with 1" bores seem pretty thin on the ground.
    * Anything I should look out for in a secondhand Rexon saw? (and anything I should watch out for in general with a secondhand table saw)

Any advice anyone could give would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers.

    Dan

I think $450 would be close to top price Dan. You can buy new contractor saws for around the asking price here. I was able to freight a cabinet saw from Brisbane to Melbourne for $220 so for around $1150 you would have a new saw with warranty.

    Hi Safari,

Thanks for your advice. That was pretty much my thinking. Besides - I'd really like a proper cabinet saw anyway - by the time I'm paying $900 for a hybrid saw I might as well pay the $300 or $400 extra to get something like a Laguna Fusion.

For now it seems to be a moot point. The seller of this particular saw isn't in a hurry to sell and wants to try his luck at getting much closer to the $900. Ahh well.

Still - on the subject of 12" table saws - do you (or anyone else out there) have an opinion on whether buying one (of any brand) would cause problems (blades harder to buy, saw less ergononic etc) - or is a 12" table saw perfectly good? (given I'll mainly be cutting smaller timber pieces and sheet products I doubt I'll need the extra cutting depth of a 12")

    Cheers

    Daniel
