Thread: Cabinet saw advice

I bought a second hand H&F ST12D Cabinet saw and it does every thing I ask of it. The Laguna's look cool, but if you are not going down the Sawstop technology route, then you just want a solid performer with lots of power, solid construction and a good fence. The advantage of these saws is the extra HP and 305mm blade. Cheers, Zac

Thanks heaps for your advice Zac. I see the H&F ST12D requires a 20amp circuit so will get my sparky to sort that if I get hold of your model. You did well to get a second hand one ! I have been on the lookout on FB marketplace to no avail...maybe that's not the best place to find good 2nd hand woodworking machines?

A 3HP TS motor should not require a 20A circuit (4mm^2 wires in the cable). What has probably happened in the past is connecting these to to a 15A circuit has probably results in the start up current tripping the 15A circuit (2.5mm^2 wire) an breaker. They probably had customers complaining about this so they upped it to 20A.

This is an over priced solution. All that may be needed is to use a slower acting 15A breaker which can momentarily (and it is very fleeting) easily handle the higher start up currents.
Using a 20A circuit will of course be part of the warranty so that needs to be factory in.
