Thread: Carbatec 10" Contractor Saw - Q with Tilt

I don't have or know of this saw but I would guess that the insert is the problem. Remove the insert and try tilting. You might have to make up a different insert with a wider opening for angled cuts.

Do you tilt with the riving knife still on?the reason I ask is that I found that as I tilted with the knife on it did not follow the blade and in fact made cutting impossible. A visit to Carbatec did not help at all(the one in the show room did the same but not as much)
After lots of looking i found that mounting plate that holds the knife and guard were fouling on the casting, a little ground off then all ok

I take off the knife and guard when using the tilt as the guard tends to foul and distort the knife.

nrb: just double checked - the riving knife does not seem to be the problem - if i remove the insert I can tilt to 45 degrees no problem. It seems to be the blade touching the inside of the insert plate.
Archer: I tend to agree that changing/modifying the insert would seem the way forward at the moment - however you would hope the factory supplied plate would support this, hence the question: is it me or the saw?

Is your insert a metal or plastic one? My saw (not a Carbatec one) came with a metal insert which had a large gap around the blade and was not suitable for thin cuts. I removed this insert and made up a wooden one from MDF. To make the slot for the blade I simply lowered the blade down as far as it would go, and put the insert in place. Started the saw and raised the blade back up to cut its own slot through the plate. I applied pressure to the top of the insert with a piece of wood to ensure it did not dislodge. Just make sure the wood is clear of the blade path. I then lowered the blade again and tilted it to 45 deg. Started and raised it up through the plate again. This gives you the two extremes of where your blade will be set to, and gives you zero clearance around the blade, which makes cutting very thin slices safe. You may be able to do the same thing with you current insert if it is a plastic one. Will just need to do the 45 deg cut.
Some blades will not go down far enough to clear the bottom of the insert which makes this task just a little bit more difficult, but can be done safely by someone who is familiar with doing this sort of thing.
Good to hear Santa was kind to you. You will enjoy using it once you get all the little bugs out, and become familiar with it. Wouldn't be without mine!!

I've gotexactly the same saw.. no problem tilting it at all... Always use guard..although be careful that plastic guard is absolute rubbish..
very flimsy... so when I was doing table undercarriage.. had to cut at 45 deg..tilted it, started the saw.. guard fell down and pretty much exploded..
Took about 100mm x 80mm chunk out of its left side (upper side)
Placed an order for JET saw guard which seem to be compatible... cost fromcarbatec $220..
still waiting for it to arrive so will let you know...
Anyway back to your issue...

Is your blade actually hitting the insert???? If not.. check the angleadjustment screw (check your manual) but they are accessed through those holesin the insert... maybe it was overtightened//

thanks for your responses. Despite all adjustments it would not tilt with the standard plate. I've ended up making my own plate out of MDF - routed to the same shape as the plate on a router with a pattern bit.

@Prie77: Along this journey I have found the Carbatec 10" Contract saw is actually a re-branded Delta 36-650 table saw. I've found more info about the saw using that as the search criteria. That may also help you in confirming the Jet compatibility you mentioned.
