Default That darn pulley keyway !! Aaarrrggghhh !

Evening all, long time stalker first time poster... Really appreciate all that I have learned from these forums.

Ok, so I'm really hoping someone has a cure for my grief...

I recently purchased a 12" Cabinet Saw, cast iron top etc - very happy (ex school unit so in good condition)...

After set up and tuning I'm ready to make my first cuts, when after about half a dozen light cross cuts, the unit starts making a god awful clanging noise. So I open the cab and find the keyway in the sawdust, not knowing what is was but thinking that metal probably shouldn't be in there, I investigate, research and learn about pulleys, key slots and keyways with grub screws.

The pulley accepts 3 belts, so I loosen the motor and remove the belts and pulley. Inspecting the pulley shows the two grub screws so I figure I will re-sit everything and tighten both screws. Simple... But oh no....

Next day I make a few more cuts and lo and behold the keyway drops out and I lose drive again. This time I inspect the pulley with greater detail and notice that the first grub screw that contacts with the keyway jiggles slightly up and down, so I figure that maybe the thread in the pulley is knackered,so I head back to the store I bought the unit from.

Great customer service from one of the engineers... He simply taps the thread again for me, and replaces the two grubs with one longer one - but it doesn't sit proud of the pulley, so I install that again. This time though I use some Loctite Blue, and leave the screw for 48hrs to cure.

I get home tonight and after fine tuning my birthday present (Incra 1000SE), I install the belts, tighten the motor - with minimal tension on the belts, about 1/4 to 1/2 Inches deflection. Make about 4 cross cuts on some ply, and the bloody thing drops out again !!

I've checked the grub screw and it hasn't budged, so I've got no flamin idea how the key vibrated out ?

The key only fits in one way, it cant be rotated 90* to give me a new surface for the grub screw, if that means anything...

    HELP PLEASE !!

Some close up photos might help us.

Does the key way sit really tight in both the pulley and shaft slots? ie the keyway should need some slight persuasion (ie wooden mallet) to go onto the shaft and the pulley should also require some persuasion to slide onto these two.

You can buy replacement keyway stock if the keyway itself is worn.

    Thanks BobL,

It appears as though your advise has actually helped anyway. After some gentle "persuasion" on the blue loctite I managed to free the set screw last night.

I was always worried about the keyway, my dad is a metallurgist and always said if metal pieces don't fit, then don't force them, and my key sipped in nicely one way, but not the other (90*rotation).

Ater pushing the key into the motor shaft, firmly sliding on the pulley and securing the set screw again (without blue loctite this time just in case), spent today cutting away quite nicely making my first dovetail joint

Checked the key at lunchtime and it doesn't appear to have moved....

    Thank you !

As an afterthought here I have seen ever so slightly tapered keyways ,this might explain why the key could not be reversed.

    Cheers
