Default De Walt Compound Mitre Saw LED light, why can't we buy them here?

I have a DeWalt DW717 XE compound Mitre Saw which suits me down to the ground and am very happy with.

On Amazon DeWalt have an LED optional extra for the saw which shines a very accurate shadow of the blade onto the workpiece exactly where it will cut. The Saw is already wired and ready to accept the LED with very little fiddling to do. It seems very worthwhile.

I have tried through the dealer to obtain this item to no avail as it's not imported by DeWalt to New Zealand.

Now I know the item would be mainly made for the USA 110 volt system but there are many other places around the world where DeWalt/Black & Decker sell their products and use 240 volts so I cannot see that the LED light would be a problem to turn out in sufficient quantities. That apart the unit has very good reviews and is overall a better in accuracy and light in ambient daylight than the alternative Laser system other makers have so why not fit it as standard anyway?

Can anyone shed a light on the problem please?

Why don't you buy it from Amazon : http://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DWS7085...B000X9EDD8#Ask. It uses a 3.3V DC driver with power supply from a transformer which would take 110~240 V ac. (from picture, which you can see here)

Thanks for your reply and the links 'justonething' ...... I am not clear about the power supply and I don't want to cough up and find its incompatible ... still trying to see if there are any pdf's instructions on the item on the web.

I don't think you will get any product details. Hopefully these pictures which are copied directly from the links provided should clarify some things. While I'm pretty sure it will accept 240V, (its the same cost with these transistors based innverters these days to auto detect input voltage), I have no idea it will fit your saw though.

justonething .... very many thanks for the posting and the best images of the item I have yet seen. It quite clearly says 110 - 240 volt and from what you say it has the electrical means to convert each voltage to the supply the bulb needs. The 'guff' says it will fit the DW 717 all models and I have inspected mine which looks pretty right. I'll have a detailed look and remove the cover thats there and compare your photos.

Thanks a lot ..... I have a sister over in Florida who needs to supply me with a few B'day pressy's. I can now get her to detail her son to do the shopping.

By the way, does this LED replace your laser or is it to be used in conjunction with your laser?

At present I have neither .... it seems from all accounts the LED is far better and more accurate than the Laser. It lights the work area and as it shines exactly from behind the saw blade the shadow is precisely the cut that will be made and the material removed. The closer the blade gets the better the definition. As I read it the LED can be on without the blade in motion.

Default The LED light has arrived....

An update on the LED light. Having had justonething's reassurance that the voltage would not be a problem i asked my sister who lives in Florida to see if she could get me the DeWalt LED light assembly. It arrived last week and as per the You Tube video it took about 15 minutes to fit to the saw. The saw is all ready to accept the unit ..... it even comes with a spanner to undo and replace the screws. You take off the two covers and replace with the switch/transformer and plug that in to the plug fitted to the machine. Then do the same woith the LED assembly. Very very easy as everything is 'tailor made'.

Plug the saw in and switch on the worklight which works whether the saw is running or not this illuminates the workplace. As you lower the saw the shadow of the saw blade becomes more and more defined on the target position to be cut. The shadow as the blade is in touch with the wood is exactly the amount and position which will be cut. Absolutely spot on .... easy to adjust the wood exactly before you run the blade to do the cut.

This is as described .... a very nice attachment ....why in the heck they don't import or even fit them to the Australasian market product fails me.

Looks like they might be a fairly standard feature now on the 300mm units, but maybe not on the 255mm ones. See item 2 in the features description for the 300mm job.
