Delta Table Saw
I have a chance to buy a Delta model 36-717 table saw with a mobile base and 30" beisemeyer fence for $950. I see that they now make a model 36-717B saw. What are the differences between the two? Is the B model an improvement or a step down? Is the one I am looking at worth $950? It looks to be in good shape. I can buy a new saw of the "B" model for $1100. What should I offer the guy? Thanks for any info.

Tommy, you are going to need a response from someone in the US on this one. Equipment prices are generally lower in the US than the rest of the world, there is a bad currency conversion rate at the moment, and I suspect that second hand market is different. Good luck.

I guess my main question is whether the "B" model, which is the only one you can buy new, is an upgrade or downgrade from the old model (36-717)

Looks like that's a Hybrid saw. I don't think that's such a great deal overall. I think it was last month's Wood Magazine did a saw comparison. Shop Fox came in best but if you have 220 v available, they gave the nod to the getting a cabiniet saw. They listed one suggestion as the Grizzly G1023SL for a cabinet saw. If you don't subscribe to Wood, check out your library for a copy - it was this last month or maybe two at the most.
With the MS Live.com rebates, I've seen some people note they've gotten the Grizzly for under $900 delivered. I've had the Grizzly for over a year now and it's cut everything I've thrown at it. The two things I didn't like are pretty much common: guard and splitter. I got a replacement splitter and built an overhead guard system and it's working very well for me.

Roger that. There are a great deal of perfectly good hybrid saws taking up room in people's garages these days. They thought they wanted to be woodworkers, then changed their minds. The wives want the saws gone so they have more room for the Lexus, etc... I wouldn't go higher than $550. If he won't take that, just keep your eye out in the paper. I personally know of two right now that aren't needed or wanted. I got my own second hand by trading an old laptop for it. Perfectly good saw, just needed a little tuneup. Best of luck to you.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
