Default DeWALT DWE7491-XE clunking/grinding sound when winding blade down

I have a DeWALT DWE7491-XE and as I recall, I have never taken the blade off. Recently I did this to take a couple of measurements and pics. Ever since then when I wind the blade down it grumbles all the way, like with each change of cog engagement.

If I put sideways pressure on the motor (so pushing it back towards the winding handle slightly) then the noise is absent.
If I put forwards pressure on the motor, the noise is absent.
If I push the blade slightly towards the fence, the noise is absent.

So I greased the winding thread:

and wound it up and down numerous times. That helped a bit.

Then I greased the supporting post or guide post on the other side of the motor:

and wound it up and down numerous times. That helped a bit.

You can see that there are two screws in the gizmo that rides up and down the guide post. Now that I look at it on my screen, it looks like the top silver screw is a set screw with a lock nut. Underneath the lower black screw there is a small metal tap. It is quite thin, and if I put outwards pressure on it (pulling it away from the post), the noise stops.

To the left of the post is a casting, and if I push that away from me (same as pushing the blade towards the fence)....the noise stops.

Through all the windings after greasing it has improved a bit, and is now most easily heard and felt in the middle third of the rise/fall distance. The top and bottom third are somewhat improved now.

What I'm wondering is if I should release the lock nut on the set screw and adjust it (and what has that tab got to do with it). Does anyone have any thoughts on that please?

    Hi FF

hope I'm not getting the blame for that lol

there are some good youtubes concerning the maintenance around this area

one of the things i've taken note of is : not to use grease anywhere due to the sawdust sticking to it and clogging up those gears and mostly the thread on the motor body/winder shaft, if stripped is very expensive to replace

rather than grease, the advice was to use inox , wd 40 or similar dry lube where the sawdust wont stick as readily

mine grumbles a bit in the gears but it is consistent no matter where it is, and it is new

I'll be making a habit of periodically blowing out the workings with compressed air

Yeah, when I saw that you'd read the thread I was nearly going to post "And this is your fault Hodgo!"

I did consider about sawdust sticking to the grease, and then I thought, meh, I can just wipe off the excess when it has penetrated into the female part of the mechanism. It's not like the sawdust doesn't stick anyway.

I spoke to the DeWalt Technician, and he suggested checking those two screws for tightness. The black one was fine, so I released the locknut on the silver screw above it, tightened it a tiny bit – some improvement – a tiny bit more and the problem is solved. Would have been about 1/32 of a turn I reckon, perhaps a smidgen more.

I think I had the same problem - clicking and jumping when winding down. Strangely it went away on its own... So I forgot about it for a while.

Useful observations - thanks for sharing!
