Default DRO with MicroAdjust on Hammer K3 Cross Cut Fence

    Hi Guys,

Having recently acquired a Hammer K3, I thought I have a go at a DRO on Cross Cut Fence.

Taking inspiration from @DerekCohen micro adjust and Dennis from @HookedonWood's DRO from Banggood, I have come up with the following.

Haven't used it enough to advise how good it is, but happy with it so far. Interested in your thoughts and suggestions.

Photos are slightly different to the 3d model as I made some mods since taking the photos.

Excuse the hardware, thats all I had lying around

Default DRO with MicroAdjust on Hammer K3 Cross Cut Fence

Hey thats neat! looks good i think i saw this on the FOG mailing list also. Does it sit along side the existing hammer flipstop or designed to replace it and become the flipstop?

    Cheers,
    Nathan

Its designed to sit alongside the existing flipstop. All you do is remove the nut, slide this is and replace the nut.

    Hi Nick,

What is the purpose of top grove slide ?
Is it used for position locking?
Is there any advantage over using the existing hammer stop locknut?

Would you share the DRO housing .stl

The assembley looks very neat and useable.

    Regards,
    Zvon

    Hi Zvon,

I ended up finding an issue with this design as it was hitting the locking mech on thin cuts and therefore only useful for about 150mm cut or longer.
Another 5 or 6 prototypes later, I came up with the revised design below.

    1. The display block holds the DRO and the magentic reader and is simply attached to the current stop block by removing the nut, sliding it onto the existing bolt and replacing the nut.

    2. The second part is the fine adjust mechanism, this is only used for fine adjustment. For normal cuts, you can still lock the standard stop block, but if you want to fine adjust, you lock this one down, loosen the standard stop block and find adjust with knurled screw.

    Default Alternative adjustment and locking

    Hi Nick,

Thank you for the posted photos, they explain a lot.
I have started modeling slightly modified housing with the intent to make it as short as possible.
The prototype of the DRO fine adjustment and locking (during adjustments) is shown below.
It comprises a knurled 20mm long M6 nut sandwiched between two 6mm thrust bearings.
The locking nut is placed on the vertical side of the cross-fence.

Will keep you updated on the progress

    Regards
    Zvon

Thanks, I like the ideal of the knurled nut so keen to see where you land.

The issue I found with having anything on the front vertical section of the fence is that I was limited to about 150mm (from memory) on the min length as it was hitting the lock knob. My original design has the display on the vertical had to change it because of that.

Keen to see the end product.

    Cheers

    Default DRO Assembly

    Hi Nick & All,

Nick has provided me with his DRO housing model.
As he is the original model creator I will not distribute either his or my 3D-printed model (acknowledging that my model is only a variation of his)

Presented in the photos below is my (possibly) final revision of the C3-31 DRO housing.
The following modifications were done, most of them very subjective and done on the run:

    1. Hammer nyloc nut reduced in thickness (still plenty for ABS wall)
    2. The DRO sensor cable was reduced to comfortably fit inside the DRO housing
    3. Wide knurled nut replaced with a 6mm thick & 25mm Dia. knurled nut (readily available from Aliexpress)
    4. New fine fence stop for adjuster - to avoid stop on the vertical face (refer to Nick's explanation)
    5. Recessed M6 hex bolt head to avoid a clash with DRO body inside the housing
    6. I have also increased some thicknesses and bracing to make the housing more rigid

The whole assembly glides smoothly on the cross-fence.
Some minor sanding of contact surfaces was required for a good fit.
This is how I use this DRO adjuster:

    1. I first adjust manually cut width to within +/-1mm,
    2. Then lock the fine adjuster and adjust to the exact cutting width with the knurled nut,
    3. Then lock the Hammer flipstop and cut
(I'm doing that as the Hammer locking mechanism is more rigid and robust)

Finally thanks to both Chris Parks and Nick for this practical and affordable DRO option.

    Regards
    Zvon
