Default Einhell RT-TS1825U / Jet Proshop vs Lagana Fusion

    Hi everyone

I'm very new to woodworking (so far I've only made a workbench and a couple of small projects like picture frames) and I am looking for an entry level table saw.

My initial feeling was to go with something decent so I don't have won't have to replace it any time in the near future (I was thinking either the Jet Proshop the Lagana Fusion).

However, my more recent thinking is that I would be better off getting something cheaper to start with until I can be sure I'll keep woodworking as a hobby, before I invest huge amounts of money. Admittedly this line of thinking is heavily influenced by my wife...

So I have two questions that kind of go different ways.

    1. If I go the start cheap option, would something like the Einhell RT-TS1825U be a decent starting option? It looks better than most of the other options in that price bracket, but I don't really know anything about it and can't find much information from people who have used one before. Or would I be better off just getting some kind of Ryobi or something (there's a guy selling a massive set of used tools on ebay at the moment that includes a Ryobi tablesaw, drop saws, sanders, router bits and other various things).

    2. If I go the quality option (which is less likely), which saw would you guys recommend out of the Proshop and the Fusion? They're the same price, but the Fusion would cost a few hundred dollars in shipping since they're not availible for pickup in my state. Also the Proshop currently comes with a bunch of extra chrome blades at the moment from Carbatec, which are no doubt worth a few bunks too (see Jet 10" Proshop Tablesaw : CARBA-TEC).

Thanks in advance for the help, guys!

    Steve

I can't help with any info on the saws you have mentioned, but as I went through a similar decision making process I will give you my thoughts.
I had a Triton, which served me well, but I wanted to upgrade. After much thought I decided not to spend the big bucks and settle for something in between.
Ultimately I bought a second hand LEDA through this forum for $600. I spent a bit more on a fence and some new blades and am very happy with it. Admittedly, I haven't had much chance to use it but believe that I made the right decision for me at this time.
I considered that a good second hand one was better value than a cheap new one. I had been looking for a while and missed out on a couple but eventually the right opportunity came along. (There was a nice Carbatec one on Gumtree for $750 that the owner decided to keep for another 6 months as he was using it and it may come back)
Another example - there is a Durden Pacemaker on Auction Blue in Adelaide, which closes tomorrow, and is currently under $200 which I think is a good buy. It is a bit small but good value.
I have seen some reasonable deals on Gumtree locally, some on ebay although not usually close and this site has quite a few which are often better quality and you know they have generally come from good homes.
I am in Adelaide, near Magill so happy to show you mine and talk it through some more.
PM if interested and I will provide details.

    Regards

    Default Jet

    Hi

Go with the jet proshop, it has a cast iron tabletop compared to a pressed alloy. I am not a woodworker by any means, bought one earlier this year and find it to be a fantastic tool to use. Previous saw was a Triton 2000, pressed steel top etc etc.

Like you I went through this excercise a couple of years ago. I done a fair bit of research trying to find a ballance between cost and quality. In the end I bought a new Jet contractors saw and it has suited my needs and I am overall very happy with it but I am now thinking I maybe should have gone the extra $400 and bought the pro shop or waited till a good quality second hand saw came up. However impatience got the better of me.
Why? You ask, well simply because this woodworking lark is bloody addictive. You see what happens when you upgrade to better quality gear is that the quality of your work improves and then people start to see that and then they want you to make things for them, but then you feel that your work needs to go up to the next level if you are making things for other people (sometimes you even get paid for your effort) and you start to question wether the equipment you have is good enough so then you upgrade again - do you see where I am going with this?

Buy the best that you can afford and if neccesary wait a bit longer it will be worth it and should you for some strange reason not continue with this wonderful past time you will have something that you can sell without losing stacks of hard earned cash.

I now would not hestiate to buy good quality second hand equipment over a new cheaper equivalent of lesser quality and for the price of my Jet I could have had I been a bit more patient.

I hope this helps in some way and good luck
    Regards Rumnut.

Thanks for the very thorough reply and the kind offer, Bauldy! I think you're probably right about holding out for a good second hand machine. It's just really hard to be patient when I don't even have crappy table saw to tide me over so I'm basically relying on a circ saw to do everything. I think that Durden Pacemaker would have been quite a good compromise, but it sold well before I saw it. That'll teach me for not checking this forum often enough . Oh well, I guess I'll have to keep my eyes open in the future. BTW I'm about half an hour or so away (around Golden Grove), so I might have to PM you at some point when I'm closer to actually making a decision if that's ok.

The Lagua Fusion has a cast iron tabletop too (Gregory Machinery - Laguna Tablesaw - Fusion Rip Tablesaw)

Thanks DD, I can definitely relate to the lack of patience thing . But yeah, I can definitely see myself in a cycle of constantly upgrading, which is why I was thinking along the lines of waiting as long as possible and spending more money than I'd prefer right off the bat, to basically save money in the long run. But the problem is that I at least need a crappy saw for a few hundred bucks or so until I save up enough for an awesome saw (and by save up enough I mean convince the boss to let me spend that much money on a saw).

I do like your point about being able to sell a good quality saw anyway. This just reinforces my feeling that second hand is the way to buy, since second hand stuff would lose value a lot slower than new.

    A couple of questions:
Do you much much room in the shed?
    Do you have 3 phase?

The reason I ask is that I browse a lot of auction sites and have found some very good buys. The reason I have let them go previously is that I don't currently have 3 phase in the shed and I don't have the room for a big sliding saw.

If you have one or both of these, I will keep an eye out for you.
PS the Durden went for just over $300, so a good buy but not a bargain imo. I bid for four items but only got one and not the one I really wanted.

Another thought is to go real cheap! There is a Triton MK3 on ebay in Adelaide going at the moment for $40. Now many forumites will not like Triton for various reasons, but it is better than nothing and for $40 plus your own saw it can let you do a lot more and give you some thinking time without the pressure of rushing into a wrong decision. My Triton served me well until I was ready to put both more time and money into wodworking. Once you upgrade you could easily sell it again or do like me and keep it as a router table and also for the odd job away from home.

It looks a bit rough but there are lots of Tritons advertised, but not often as cheap.

As I said, just a left field idea to think about.

Not a whole lot, unfortunately. It was built for a single car, but it's a bit longer. Definitely not enough room for a massive sliding saw

Does that mean do I have 15A sockets? I don't think so. It's just a single power point connected to a bunch of double adapters and power boards

Yep, I'm seriously thinking about going that way. If I can get something for around a hundred bucks it really wouldn't matter if I replaced it quickly and I probably wouldn't even both reselling it. And hopefully once I've been using a table saw for a bit I would be able to understand what to look for and what's actually important (the issue with the second hand idea is that it's pretty daunting when I haven't had any hand-on experience using one before. I've been reading a book about table saws, but it's really not the same as having one to play around with yourself).

    Thanks again for the help!
