How many times over the last two years have you wished you could cut 4" in one pass? Your answer probably lies there.

FWIW, this was my final choice

The TS10L from Carbatec. Still setting it up, and haven't cut anything yet, but we'll get there.

Now to get some decent blades for it.

    Very nice Stuart.

I would purchase a top quality 60T blade and use only for crosscutting AND ripping very short pieces which you might not need to even plane or thickness after cutting.

A bog standard general purpose blade 40T will most probably be all you need unless you are working the machine 8 hours a day. For those Australian hard timbers perhaps a 24T for long rip lengths.

Have you looked at the Northwood Tools blade, around the $30 mark, I have the 24T the 40T and the 80T, brilliant blades.

I take it the shed is finished then?

I have a couple of initial questions though:

    1. Fred - how much to commission you to build another of those awesome wheeled platforms? Looks the bees knees! (From Eagle has landed thread)

    2. With the riving knife being quick release, and the guard not, and the table insert being only able to be removed when the guard isn't there, and the riving knife quick release can only be accesses when the insert has been removed, how in the world do you actually insert and release the riving knife and guard and insert?

It seems I either have to reach right through the belly of the beast (past the motor) to try to fiddle to reach the "quick release", or I have to unbolt the guard, remove th insert, to release the quick release. Seems to defeat the purpose! So - what have I missed, or what mod is required? Or is this only a problem with the latest TS10L, in which case, can I see a closeup photo of the table insert to see where it is different?

    TIA

Stuart, I can't weld for sh*t, the bloke welding it in those pictures is a mate, so I'm afraid you're out of luck.
Can give you the dimensions though if you need them.

Quite easy actually, wind blade to top position, lift insert at front whilst pushing up anti-kick back doobies. You can now reach the quick release quite easily.

Stuart, if you get all the dimensions from Fred, I am happy to weld the platform up for you

Generous offer there DJ! Don't know about raw materials - any thoughts?

I can pay in steel if that is of interest - I have quite a supply of 38mm round, 1mm wall thickness, 1m length if that is useful?

G'day Stu, have had a look through Big Shed's thread and from what I can see, it's all pretty straight forward, just need to purchase the MB-6 Economy Mobile Base from Carbatec and some 38x38x2.5mm steel tube and some dimensions from Fred and the rest is pretty much straight forward.
    Cheers

Thanks DJ - was just playing out there to see what the current base is like (the heavy duty 600lb one from Jet) and it doesn't seem too bad (although it only goes around the actual cabinet - not sure how much of a disadvantage that is). Can I let you know if I find it isn't? Definitely appreciate the offer!

Fred - heh - time for another (obviously tired) sheepish grin. I should have been able to work that one out! It's the same technique for inserting oversized router bits through a template guide.

I guess I was looking for the obvious solution (ie that it just works and the insert can be placed and removed at will without having to get under it to release the quick release before removing it all.) Is that how other saws work (those with guards attached to the riving knife)? The only ones I actually saw and played with to that level had the splitter and guard coming over the back of the table, rather than with the riving knife. I think I expected the insert to have an opening big enough to get to the quick release, or for the insert to have a slot that went through the back, so it was placed around the riving knife, rather than have the riving knife inserted through the insert.

The manual sure doesn't indicate the actual steps involved, so I'm guessing I'm not the only one caught out for not thinking laterally enough!
