Felder Planer Thicknesser
Hi All,
Does anybody know if its possible to swap the cutter knives and block on a Felder Planer Thicknesser for the Helixecal Blades (spelling is most likely wrong) I have approached Felder but they don't seem to be interested in telling me yes or no. Could be they dont want to lose the future sale of blades.
Regards
Paddywack

Anything is possible, just depends how much messing around you're prepared to do

A number of the Helix manufacturers used to provide a special order service, I am pretty sure Shelix.com was one of them.

In my discussions regarding the purchase of a Felder combination machine I was led to believe it was possible, but the factory pricing was prohibitive with pricing increasing from disposable HSS to carbide to Tersa to helical. It is not in the options in the brochure (I'm sure you are aware) and it was actively discouraged.
At the Sydney show there was a stand at which the operator offered a helical cutter for virtally any machine. He had a list of machines which took one of the standard heads available (in the order of 20 or so) and the price was between 1/2 -1/3 the price of a Shelix head (which he was also able to offer) If the machine was uncommon he could do a special run but would prefer a run of more than 10 to keep costs down. These were obviously significantly more expensive. I took his brochure and only threw it out recently- can't remember any detail and I've been trying to google a floor map of the show with no success as I thought I could work out his details.
The crux of the matter is that it comes down to cutter diameter and length, and shaft and bearing diameters. It maybe useful to contact one of the major machinery suppliers to enquire, or to wait till the next show.
I'm sorry I can't be of more help- if you can find a floor plan and direct me to it I may be able to work out who it is
