Default Felder Table Saw stopping technology

    Hi guys,

I noticed that Felder Group released some info on a new table saw with flesh sensing technology. It looks like a much better system than what is used by saw stop, in that it doesn't require an actual touch to activate, working on what they call the electro-magnetic law of repulsion to predict / sense an imminent touch and retract the blade. It also doesn't damage the blade and you can resume work with "the push of a button".

It looks to be an option on one of their Format 4 saws at the moment, though I guess it may be cascaded down to their lower end saws in the future, eg. Other Felder models and Hammer etc. I like that it's an option as well - don't have to pay if you don't want it! Great!

If you google Felder PCS you'll find details.

    Cheers, Dom

About time sawstop had some competition. Have to wait and see how it goes. Mind you my faith in trickle down economics is a bit whittled down now. May have to rely on being alert to keep fingers being whittled down for a few more years yet.
    Regards
    John.

    Hi Dom

I posted this a month ago

    Some Felder news

".... Felder have their own version of the Sawstop technology, and apparently it is a whole new generation of electronics. It sounds a little similar to the Bosch Reaxx in that the blade drops down, and is not damaged. Just reset. Unfortunately, it is only going to be available at first on the top-of-the-line sliders. I guess we will eventually see it filtering down the lines."

    Regards from Perth

That would be Fe$tool buying Sawstop. They’ve demo’d a version of their CMS with Sawstop tech fairly recently.

Sawstop were pretty aggressive defending their tech with Bosch, so hopefully the Felder tech is different enough from theirs to prevent another raft of competition-crushing lawsuits

Sorry Derek, I did a search and couldn't find anything so figured no-one had discussed it.

It would be very interesting to find out what the "option" for this to be added to the Format 4 saw costs. This would also give an indication of whether their tech is likely to be implemented on their lower-end saws. If it's very expensive then it may not be a viable feature on anything but their top-end stuff.

If I ever upgrade table saws in the future, it will be to a slider like the Hammer. Given I've never been interested in blade-stopping feature (particularly saw-stop's where the blade and cartridge is damaged), and given that a slider is inherently safer anyway, the cost of this upgraded safety device would have to be fairly low / reasonable for me to tick the option. Funnily enough, the fact it is an option and not imposed as a default would actually make me more likely to go with it, provided it was a couple/few hundred bucks or so.

If the tech does trickle-down, I'm also thinking that it may lead to more nice Felder/Hammer sliders used in businesses to be sold on the second-hand market - a possibly great buying opportunity - especially if most buyers really want the blade stopping tech!

    Cheers,

    Dom

If I am to have technology like this in my workshop. it will need to be on ALL of my machines, not just panel saw/table saw, if not, I rather not to have any at all.

    you're right.
    I got my "Fs" confused.

As you go on to say, it will be interesting what attitude Festool take to the SawStop patents ...

I never saw a SS video testing using a real live finger. There was a lady in the onlooking crowd that showed a very marked sigh of relief, maybe his wife perhaps? Go to about 6:45 in as the current URL paste refuses to go that mark.

I liked the spindle Moulder, especially the eccentric insert rings.

Nor I... but I have seen a live demo where the operator tripped it with his finger. Quite a few years ago at the SS stand at a T&WWW show, from memory. I do not think it was deliberate and he did have the faintest nick on the end of his finger to show for it.

I remember being there when an agent of the show turned up and asked him to not do it again.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

I can wholeheartedly attest to Skews post. That saw stop scared the hell out of many people at shows but never a drop of blood or sav meat spilled. I spill more blood from my diabetic blood test than from a saw stop.

Makes a mess of the saw but not you. That's a really good thing.
