Can you fit a dado blade to a Makita 2708?
Evening Brains trust, a quick question if I may. I have an old Makita 2708 tablesaw. It's not a fancy bells and whistles machine but it does the job for me and is reasonable accurate. I'm starting to get into some projects that would really benefit from being able to use a dado blade but I'm unsure as to whether it's posible to fit one to this unit. The manual makes no mention but a quick google turns up an dado insert plate for this saw (no longer available mind you).
So over to you guys. Is it possible? Has anyone out there actually done it?
cheers

Haven't used one or seen one but googled up a manual . Towards the end, it discusses using a 6 inch Mak dado set with the saw, so it is possible. However they reccommend using only the Mak set, and it needs a specific nut for the dado set as well as the normal arbor nut. Their set (and probably the arbor) is limited to 1/2 inch width dados.

I suggest you pm delbs, or maybe he will find this thread. He has a similar table saw and had the same problem. I think the issue is that the arbor bolt is not long enough and he wasn't able to find a longer replacement. Something like that anyway.
I'll shoot him a note to help him find this.
Either way, using a dado takes a fir bit of grunt, so you'd need to take it easy.

Thanks Mal, I completely missed that section of the manual. A quick google shows it may be possible to get the specified makita dado set. Now I just need to go cap in hand to the minister for finance

Even though it can be possible, with that model, it'll definitely struggle to spin. As Trav suggested, you need a lot of grunt. I've got a 3HP table saw and it takes a good few seconds to get a 20mm stack spinning.

Hey woodpecker i was investigating the same thing for my Metabo TS 250 table saw. I was told it 'can handle a dado stack' but in the end i stopped with this idea because
1.) i couldn't get an arbor extension
2.) the metal dust extraction shroud covers a large portion of the dust extraction housing under and around the blade so i didnt want to cut into that or remove it
3. As mentioned in other posts HP was an issue so even if i could get the stack to fit it wouldn't be powerful enough to run through any stock and in my eyes end up being quiet dangerous.
So i gave up on the dado stack idea for dado and half lap joints i move to my router tables with a large variety of profile bits and also my hand saws and router plane.
I've kept my dado stack and will keep it in mind when purchasing my new table saw one day that will be powerful enough to run the infamous dado
Hope this helps
