If you set up something solid on the other side of the shaft to hammer the roll pin out against you'll find it much easier. A suitable length piece of wood or steel braced against the floor or another part of the saw is the way to go.

    OK, so an update.

Today I picked up a 3mmx16mm and a 4mmx16mm roll pin and a set of the pin punches.

I was able to remove the old roll pin with just the pliers, so may end returning the pin punches.

The 3mmx16mm fit perfectly. The 4mm could too as the 3mm was reasonably easy to get in, but it doesn't fall out

I ended up just using washers to the close gap where the collet should have been. I had considered the drill stop but in the end the washers did the job perfectly. The saw is functioning perfectly! For future reference I used 8 x m10 zinc washers.

It is winding really easily - should I disassemble and lubricate? Either way - whilst the blade is off, I'mm going to give it a good clean out.

Thanks again for everyones help! This ended up being quite an enjoyable and educational task

    fantastic news.

My only comment would be that the height adjust is designed to lock down when you turn the plastic lock knob - it presses the larger handle firmly down over the roll pin and then binds the face against the washers. If your handle is doing that all the time then you don't really get the benefit of the lock/release as its meant to. But as long as you think it's good, it's good! Now time to make sawdust

Great to see it all fixed with the help of other members, that's part of the reason for the Forums. I have been following along in the background and had nothing more to add than the guys who were assisting so a great collaboration between you all.

OK ... I will have a look at this tonight and try to understand that component. I did clean it out over the weekend but I was reluctant to pull it right apart. Maybe I was too cautious!

Is it as simple as expressure against the washer causing friction? The issue with my fix is that the loose washers would continue to spin?

    Cheers

ha ha - I certainly appreciated the help. Yesterday I was able to use the saw again. Even better was using it with more confidence given the support of this group!

yes, exactly that - the friction between the saw's fixed body (via the sleeve on that pokey out thing) binds against the back of the handle when the plastic knob is tightened down. But when the plastic knob is loosened off, the shaft should be free to spin. My concern, without some form of lock, is that the shaft can still pull through the casting and cause the same issue you originally saw (even if only a little way). If you had a collet locked to the shaft, it couldn't pull back in, while still allowing you to lock down the height

As long as the roll pin and washers are in place there's no possibility of the worm gear winder shaft moving back in to the machine body. I have a number of loose washers on the shaft on my saw (inserted them so that the angle pointer is closer up on to the angle markings) and there are no issues with the shaft locking down. If you're happy with the engagement of the worm gear in the teeth on the rise and fall arbor support there's no reason that you have to go any further. The worm gear winder shaft to eccentric shaft fit is not a high wear area. Having said that though I'd pull it apart and grease it while it's all still fresh in your mind.

Ok, so its been a while and I've really been enjoying using the saw! The worm gears have stayed engaged - yee haa!. There is still one small niggling issue that I believe relates to the comment below by @poundy ...

It's not so much that the handle is locking down all the time - it is the fact the knob that tightens the handle against the roll pin actually loosens as I wind the handle. This causes the handle to eventually come off the roll pin. I then have to retighten the knob against the handle.

So - my question - which part is meant to stop the knob loosening as I wind the handle? I have reread this post and I believe it might relate to the use of washers instead of the collet? Or is it that I am not using the indicator plate?

OK, so I think it was a simple fix! First thing I did was to remove the locking knob and give it a clean where it nests into the roll pin, this improved it a little.

I then realised that I could look at the blade angle "winder" as a working example. After inspecting this winder I realised that I had put too many washers on the blade rise and fall mechanism - this prevented the locking knob to engage properly.

I took off two washers and it is now working perfectly! ... for now

Still a bit of a "make do" fix, but it will do me for now.
