Default Hammer K3 Owners: Slide Travel

Question for the K3 owners out there: what are the limits of your slider's travel? I've stripped, cleaned and lubed most of the bits of my new saw. The extent of the slider travel can be seen in the pics below. I'm not sure if this is normal? The manual seems to suggest that it should go further back for access to the arbor when changing the blade.

I didn't take the whole slider off during my cleaning, so I haven't checked the scraper cage, which is what the slider seems to be stopping against at the limits. I'll pull it all apart if the travel I'm getting isn't as much as it should be.

The two allen head bolts are the stops but you most probably know that. My K3 Winner table goes nearly back to the infeed of the blade which is further back than yours but I don't know if that varies with the saw configuration. Derek Cohen's machine would be a better example. BTW I have full work shop manuals in PDF's if you want them. Edit, by the looks of the bolt positions I would say they are correct, you can see the stop against the bolt when the table is fully back on the infeed, the other one can't be seen.

This is the max travel on mine, looks to be a bit better than yours.

    Hope that helps.

Mine does not go as far as Andrew's so it could be model dependent.

My slider is 1300mm long and its total travel is around 1420mm, not sure how that compares to other peoples.

Andrew's makes much more sense though - you have full access to the blade when changing. Might have been an update I suppose.

I think I'll the table apart just to be sure everything is moving properly. The saw had clearly been standing for a while, and that darn DC pipe was no-where to be seen, so who knows when it disintegrated and not replaced.

That'll be interesting and test your patience getting it level again. A two year old could have invented a better system than Felder did for levelling the slider.

These are the photos I have. Will take more.

Extent of rip on slider (12" blade and full extension): 54"

Mine is the same as Derek's. Moving the stop would achieve more travel and I did play with the idea by removing the allen heads but it was too long ago to remember what the result was and it was most probably not good because I didn't do it. I have often wondered if a longer table can be fitted as well but never chased that idea seriously.

I suspect there's an issue with mine then - fully forward, I only have half the blade exposed. I think that the scraper cage is hitting the two small allen bolt stops on top of the bed, and stopping the slider there, rather than the slider stops hitting the central allen bolt. So I think the scraper cage may be jammed in the slider - not sure though. I'll pull it apart this week. Shouldn't need to move anything on the base, so I won't need to do any re-adjusting for square and level.

When I collected my saw I had to unexpectedly and quickly remove the slider to fit it in my trailer, setting it up again was no big deal. Setting up the fence mount though, that was a bit of a nightmare.

    Cool

    Fixed!

    full travel.jpg

Not without a considerable amount of swearing and head scratching. Had the slide on and off several times before it clicked.

Turns out it pays to read the small print:

As suspected, the culprit was the cage plate, wot is the device upon which the slider slides:

    cage plate.jpg

And it's absolutely critical to reassemble the slide according to the manual - in particular, 50% of the plate must overhang as you re-instal the slide:

cage plate assembly.jpg cage plate position.jpg

If you don't do this, the plate travel will limit slide movement at the start of travel. Someone must have had the slide off on my saw at some point, and reassembled incorrectly.

All back together now, and I get full access to the blade. Hooray, cue dancing, cheering and strong drink.
