Given your reasonable sized budget, would you consider a second hand sliding tablesaw/ panelsaw (1.0 -1.6m stroke) in a European or Scandinavian brand? Depending on the size of your workshop and what sort of woodworking you are doing, it will provide a bit more versatility. Perhaps a Minimax (made by SCM/Samco), Sicar, Casedai, Luna, Robland, Casolin, or Hammer (made by Felder - although the Hammer is probably out of the price range!). It takes a bit of searching and waiting for the write one to come up, but your persistence should be rewarded when you find "the one".

Anyway, it was just a thought. I have always bought second hand machinery and only once regretted doing so (when I wasn't thorough enough with my pre-purchase inspection).

Good luck with the search, regardless of which way you go.

I don't know about this particular saw, but it looks from the photos to have the mostly the same fence as the platinum, which I liked the feel of better. The other two features I liked that separated them were the quick change riving knife and the 3 hp motor.

I think this will be a 15 amp saw compared with the fusion 10 amp if that matters. I paid the extra and didn't regret it. Only you know how much you are willing to pay, or how involved you will be with woodworking in the future. Both seem fine saws.

Woodchopper, a second hand saw does not worry me. I have been looking for the past month or so for a saw and nothing in the second hand market seems to interest me. Also due to my location the money saved in buying a second hand saw is soon out weighed by the cost of me having to travel to pick them up as most are pick up only and this also makes pre purchase inspections almost out of the question.

The fact that I will also get some sort of warranty also helps as I am very new to woodworking.

I also do not want to do what I did last saw purchase where I bought it but soon out grew it. Also at the time I knew very little about what makes a good table saw good.

The money I have spent on the last two would almost be $1000 and I know this could have purchssed me something pretty good, but I guess mistakes are made to learn from.

Zzpanic, it does have a 15amp plug but I am lucky to have a sparky for a mate who can help me out there.

Tusks heaps for the sdvice so far. I just am a bit wary of spending this amount of cash if there is a chance that the table saw I would be getting might be crap.

To answer your original question this saw seems identical to the Laguna Platinum and the Grizzly G0690. Reviews for the latter are easy to find online.

Moving up from a contractor saw is a huge difference to this saw.

Happy hunting. I remember the first advice a friend gave me regarding these. "Buy the best you can afford." They seem a bit like buying small boats in that there isn't really separate price points, but a continuum. When I went to buy a boat a few years ago it wasn't too hard to justify the ever increasing cost over the previous model I desired, but the final price difference to my original budget was huge.

I went through two saws (secondhand) before I knew what was important to me, and think that is an excellent route to go. An unique opportunity came up for me to get my current saw, otherwise I'd still be making do with a 20 year old contractor saw.

Value for money is certainly available on used items - but will take investment of time and energy (and luck) to get a good one.

Reviews on the Grizzly sound great (to be expected) so it looks like I will go with the Harvey.

Two week wait till some more are in stock, but I can handle that.

No, it isn't the same. Right tilt versus left is the first obvious thing I noticed.

I see from other thread that you decided to go with Laguna - what swayed you in that direction?
I am also looking at all those saws at the moment - plan to buy towards the end of the year.

the reason I picked the laguna was the features I wanted it already had built in (mobile base, good fence, single phase power) and also because of the great reviews (I have not read a bad one yet)

i am still waiting for it to arrive. I was told the 7th of September but this has now been pushed back to the first week of October. So it will be close to 3months before I even get to touch it.

also the laguna was the first table saw I liked, then I did my head in comparing the rest available and did a full loop back to laguna. Part of me was over researching and just wanted a new table saw. That worked out as I'm still waiting.

Thanks again for this. I still have some time to think - for me the harvey also appeals, because I can drive to pick it up, whereas with Lagoona it is an extra 200 to get it delivered...
