Default Help Please - Problem With Jet 10" LT Table Saw

This morning I attempted to use my new saw for the very first time to make a test cut. To say I was surprised at the result is an understatement. The motor rotates in the wrong direction - ie. away from the operator!!

Can this be the result of incorrect wiring of the motor during production and if so what is required to fix it.

The attached photo is of the external wiring connections (junction box?). Is it merely a matter of swapping the position of the two red leads from the motor?

Your help will be very much appreciated.

Unfortunately Hitch, swapping the two red leads will not reverse the motor.
If it's brand new have it reversed under warranty. If it was transported some distance, see if the shop will have a local sparky come and do it for you.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Good question, no easy answer tho'.

First thing to do is ring the supplier & tell them what the problem is and ask what they propose to do about it - don't try to change anything before hand that would let them off the hook. They may well send out a 'techo' to fix it as it would be covered by normal retail warranty - 'dead on arrival'. Or they may nominate a local repairer who will come and repair it at their expense.

If they try to get you to pay for anything - including return freight - I'd contact the local 'Department of Fair Trading/Consumer Affairs' or what ever it's called in Tassie. I believe its the same in all states - if it doesn't work out of the box, then its your choice of repair, replace or refund.

All that aside, yes, it is likely to be a wiring problem, but the relevant connection may be inside the motor housing, not just at the on/off switch, which is why there are electricians who specialise in machinery & ones who change light bulbs.

Thanks NCArcher and bsrlee for your responses,

    So it's not simple ah.

I will certainly contact the supplier who is based in QLD on Monday. However, a complication may be that I purchased the saw about 20 months ago around the time I moved to Tas from Sydney and it has been in storage for most of that time.

It is an expensive saw and I had to modify the front rail to make it fit and now this. Very disappointing,

Thanks again and I will post an update when the issue is resolved.

    Hitch,

if it is out of warranty, just call a local electrician. It is more than likely a fairly simple fix. The connection to the start winding in the motor needs to be changed. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes . If it is more serious than that, a qualified electrician will still be able to fix it fairly easily.

Thanks Avery. That will be my approach if no assistance from the supplier is forthcoming.

Thanks ClintO, with the passing of time the update I promised slipped my mind.

My supplier contacted the manufacturer (Jet) who showed no interest because the warranty period had passed. Wouldn't get away with it if manufactured in Aus' as it was DOA. My supplier did however support me by refunding the $132.00 cost of reversing the direction of the motor. I took the motor to a local rewinder who modified the internal wiring.
