    Default Help Needed With Saw Rebuild

    I've almost completed the rebuild of a Austrec saw/planer combo. It was picked up at a garage sale with the following problems;
    The motor would not run.
    The arbor bearings were very noisy.
    The fence locking mechanism was broken.
    Everything was rusty.
    Crown guard, riving knife and cutter guard were missing.

    The failure to start was due to a broken wire on the starter capacitor, new arbor bearings fixed the noise problem. I turned up a new fence locking pin and stripped derusted painted and relubricated everything on the machine.
    The saw was a pleasure to work on with nice close tolerances, when reassembled blade runout was less than a thou, not bad for a saw which I suspect must be about 40 yrs old.
    My problem lies with the missing parts I would like to get the saw as close to original condition as possible, If anyone out there has one of these machines and could post pics of the crown guard, riving knife and planer cutter guard it would be a great help.

    God job Lister, the machine being the age that it is it may not have a riving knife you may have to retrofit it some way, I have the same problem with a machine I am currenlty rebuilding. As for the saw guard, looks like it mounts via the large hole in the table corner, or it could also be designed for a power feed arm

    Thanks China, the saw did have a riving knife it was carried in the square block that sits just behind the blade, the block rises and falls with the blade. If it had a riving knife I'm presuming it had a crown guard.

    Not always the case I've seen many machines where the guard and knife are separate.if you have a mounting for the knife you can fabricate one using just an angle grinder and a file. you use the blade to get your curve and stock thickness, then carefully taper the front to back of the whole thing, if you have a belt grinder it will be much easier. you could also fabricate a guard, even if it was temperary until the genuine item comes your way

    You could well be right about the guard, especially as there is a mounting point at the back of the table which might be usesd to support a guard. I was planning to make a couple of riving knives, one to carry a guard and another to use when making less than a full cut.
