Default HELP! Robland K26 combo...How do I get the fences to fit?

I recently bought an old Robland K26 (from what I can tell...260mm Cutters on the Planer Cutterhead) from the partner of a deceased woodworker. She handed over the machine a few weeks back, I told her that I thought there might be a Fence and or Fences that were still in the workshop somewhere that should have been with the machine and today she gave me a couple of parts that she figures might be what I am looking for. One clearly looks to be the Fence for the Planer, but I can't work out how it attaches, the other baffles me, though I think it is part of the machine. Here are some pics that might help someone here "direct traffic" and help me get this old gal workable.
I will post this and add pics once I have worked out how to retrieve them from Photobucket.com

    Default Here we go!

    Pic 1
The machine with the Planer Fence sitting roughly in position. There is a cutout in the base of the fence where the cutter block is free to spin without cutting into the fence, as well the attached metal plate has a bent edge that rests against the table to keep the plate from touching the turning cutterhead. So it seems to me that it sits like this

    Hi Terry

I have what looks like an identical machine but the planer fence was missing from nine when I got it so I am not exactly sure how the one that you have fits but I think that it goes on the other side. As you have it sitting on the saw table the planer guard would foul it as a piece of timber was put through. Does the square bar on the back of the fence fit in the bracket with the orange handle on the RH side of pic 2? The manual that I have shows a planer fence (different to the one that you have) mounted to the jointer table where that bracket is.

BTW the manual can be downloaded from http://www.u-manual.com/download-man...l#.Uy6hMaJ2l8E

I suspect that the long bar is associated with the docking table, did you get this with the machine?

I have had to replace virtually all of the fences and accessories on mine and am happy to help if you want any more info.

    Regards

    Ian

I went out and tried it as you suggested and it does fit in that bracket, 'tho a little wobbly, in that the unsupported end, bottom corner of the fence that runs over the outfeed table, drops down onto the table, but comes up if you lift it, even though the bracket is done up tightly. with this movement, the fence goes out of square and wouldn't be any good squaring up a piece of wood.

BTW the manual can be downloaded from http://www.u-manual.com/download-man...l#.Uy6hMaJ2l8E

I have that manual, the one that came with the machine and it isn't very helpful, but I will have another look now that I have these parts

I suspect that the long bar is associated with the docking table, did you get this with the machine?

I only got both pieces today and they both look as though they are part of the machine, which clearly the fence does

I have had to replace virtually all of the fences and accessories on mine and am happy to help if you want any more info.

I'd be very keen to see some pics of your machine, with the replaced fences and some detail of what you did and via who...

As I said, I really appreciate your help with this!

    Default Thanks Ian

I will look forward to seeing what you have. I feel that I have the makings of something pretty good, but some aftermarket fences might be just the ticket to being making this the "go to" machine in my workshop.

    Hi Terry

Just a bit of background about this machine. I bought it for a low price from someone who had taken it for trade debt and then had it sitting around unused for about 10 years, it was basically sound but the only accessory that came with it was the saw fence. It has had quite a lot of professional use and at some point and has been given a flash up by a dealer (new paint etc). It is a K260 made in 1983. I do have the mortice table but it isn't mounted in the pictures.

This is the basic machine. In this picture you can see the genuine saw fence and the blade guard which is a 'Shark Guard' I ordered this from the US without difficulty http://www.thesharkguard.com/ the only issue was that the riving knife needed a small amount of grinding, Lee had a pattern for one that fitted a somewhat newer machine. If you ever decide to go this way let me know and I will do a tracing which Lee can use to make it up. I really like this setup because the guard comes off easily leaving the riving knife in place. This then rises and falls with the blade allowing the planer fence to fit. IMG_0117.jpg
Here you can see the dismounted parts of the Shark Guard.
    IMG_0116.jpg
This is the riving knife without the guard on it.

The machine originally had a sliding docking table but it was missing. Initially I made up a table extension that turned it into a cabinet saw. If you (or anyone else reading this) wants it let me know.
    IMG_0125.jpg

I was then lucky to pick up a Carbatec sliding table second hand from a forum advert.
    http://www.carbatec.com.au/carba-tec...g-table_c21067

    IMG_0118.jpg

This thing will cross-cut a sheet of ply which is just great! I have just been using it to cut ply for the SCMS bench/wood rack in the background.

It was not however easy to fit as it is designed to go on a saw with a thick square edge. I had to mount a spacer bar alongside the saw table and then mount the edge of the slide to that.

    IMG_0123.jpg

It came without a planer fence. In this photo you can seethe mount on the joiner table which I assumed was for the fence. It is similar to yours but takes a round bar. I will use it to hold a fence for wider ripping when I get around to making it. Sitting on the planer table is the spanner for the saw arbor, I got this from the Australian agent, 'Beyond Tools' in WA, they were very helpful.

    IMG_0127.jpg

This shows the planer fence in place. I got his from Leda Machinery, it is the fence that they supply with their new combinations

    http://www.ledamachinery.com.au/index.php/combinations

Leda brought it in for me, it was not ex-stock. This took quite a long time but it was quite cheap, around $150. To mount it on the saw table I used one of the threaded holes for the shaper fence and then drilled and tapped a second hole. To work with the fence in this orientation I moved the planer blade guard to the other side of the outfeed table. The guard is one that I made up from some plastic pipe as the original was broken.
    IMG_0120.jpg

This is the other side of the fence sitting on the saw table. As the fence came it was a bit long and it had a machining flaw at one end - it was easy to know where to cut off the excess length!

    IMG_0121.jpg

I bought a cheap mitre gauge from Carbatec, tossed the bar and mounted it to one that fits the slide. Now I have the sliding table I will probably never use it.
    IMG_0128.jpg

Also from Beyond Tools I bought the router bit collet for the spindle, it takes an 8mm shaft... It would be OK with a large bit but is not fast enough for a small bit.

    IMG_0131.jpg

I also added self set disposable joiner blades. This was not a cheap addition but I suspect that the 10 blades (20 edges) is a lifetime supply. They were as easy to fit as the website makes it look.

    http://www.estausa.com/self-set.html

I got new belts for the saw from CBC without difficulty.

I am not sure that the chuck that you have for the mortiser is the correct one and I would be interested to see a closer picture.

I am really pleased with the machine, everything works well and with the minimum vibration and noise. The next step is to sort out the dust collection.

I hope that this is useful, let me know if you want any more detail. I am not that far from you so if you would like to see the machine let me know.

    Default Many thanks mate.

    Hi Ian,
Thanks for your efforts with regard to answering this thread. Clearly you have your machine sorted out nicely and I will use the info you have put here to get mine set up and working well. I need to work out what I can do to have the Planer Fence being held solidly in place, it is pretty unusable as it is right now, as it moves around and I can't tell why, other than to say that where it mounts, which is where you said it did, doesn't "lock" it up.
You mentioned that you aren't that far from me (Mount Barker SA) and I would be keen to come and see your machine first hand sometime?
    Let me know if okay.
    Cheers and thanks again
    Terry

    Hi Terry,

Glad this was useful. I am happy for you to come and have a look. I am at Willunga. I am around this weekend but will be tied up next weekend and over Easter, send me a PM and we can sort something out.

Perhaps bring the planer fence and the mount (if it is like mine it comes off easily) and we will see if we can stiffen it up.

    Regards

    Ian
