Default Hey! Got my first table saw! Thoughts?

So I posted last week that I was looking at the secondhand 12" roughy for around the $300 price tag and the comments that came in were quite positive... unfortunately my bid fell short and the saw went to someone else.

Not to worry though as I was perusing the local Gumtree column a little saw, not too far away, came up!! The Makita 2708. It's obviously a smaller, portable styled saw but at only $150 and a sinch to move I decided that I'd jump on it. It is in fantastic condition for it's age and doesn't appear to have had a heavy life. The bloke I bought it from had used it to cut simple boards for a platen printing press and that's about it.

I've only found a couple comments in a U.S thread regarding this saw and they talked quite highly of it.

Anyone here that have owned or used this little guy?

Let me know what you think of my first purchase.

    Cheers

What a steal! $150! A good blade will probably cost about that anyway...

I had a Ryobi very similar to that. Looks like the same design. It worked reasonably well and I did a lot of work with it. Being Makita of that vintage it should be better made than my Ryobi. You should check that the blade is parallel to the table slots and adjust to suit. The fence can also be adjusted if not in line with the blade. The miter guage is not the best on those kind of saws but a sled can be made for accurate cross cuts. Properly set up it will do a reasonable job. I found the router wing very usefull and made a router fence that bolted on the the metal fence. All up not bad for the money.
    Regards

With a tune up it will serve you fine, especially at that price.
