Horizontal mortiser
I have a Griggio (aka Mini Max) U31 combination machine, with a a fairly substantial horizontal mortiser unit attached.
My trouble is with the cutter - slipping in the chuck (which is, I believe, a 2-jaw Westacott chuck). No matter how hard I tighten the chuck, even using a pipe on the allen key to get more leverage, the cutter will suddenly slip out after a couple of cutting passes.
Slightly scary, to say nothing of messing up my mortise!
I deepen the cuts very slowly (2 mm at a time), have the right reverse twist cutters, and, more recently, have even drilled out the mortise on a drill press before using the mortiser to clean up.
Nothing seems to help.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? Many thanks.

Can you replace the chuck with something like a Jacobs?

Thanks for your interest. Changing the chuck might, in the end, be my only option. First up, though, I'm hoping that someone might spot whether I am doing something wrong. There doesn't actually seem anything wrong mechanically with the Westacott chuck (other than not holding properly of course), and given its substantial size I would have thought it should do the job.

I've now cleaned it thoroughly, although it looked pretty clean anyway - no sawdust, grease, etc.
I've yet to try the mortiser again after this, though.

Mortiser issues
I'm in no way familiar with this machine but I have seen and used a few mortisers in the past. First off it sounds like you're plunging then sliding the work piece. Is this something the machine is designed to do? Second thought is the cutters themselves, are they the right ones for your machine? I find it hard to believe the mfg selling a machine for that purpose then the thing not working correctly unless there's some issue.
Wish I could help but all I can come up with is a couple of questions.
