Incra Miter Gauge - Metric Scales
Okay, slightly confused. Have recieved mixed (yes, no, yes but) information from various sources regarding metric scales for an Incra 1000SE Miter Gauge. Anyone changed their imperial set to metric? Opinions, ideas, and what's invovled appreciated.
BTW, I haven't bought a 1000SE yet, but am seriously considering. Any thoughts on alternatives (Kreg, Jessem, etc) welcome and best places to purchase that ship to NZ.
Current USD-NZD exchange rate is not helping matters
Thanks,

Your talking about the fence ? and racks ? incra.com and email them, that is your definitive source.
I thought they were available but incra are the ones to ask. Great customer service.
Now why do you want a 1000se ? I've got a v27 can can't for the life of me imganine needing one of the higher end models unless you cut a LOT of weird angles. The extending fence looks like a good idea but I decided a MDF fence is much better. You can custom make them for different jobs and being consumable you get a zero clearance fence. 2c...
I bought my V27 and incra rules from a chap with an ebay store. His price plus shipping from the US was as good as anyone I could find. A lot of the supercheap online vendors nail you on shipping. He charges actual. If you search incra and my username you should find a link...I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.

I did write to Incra, and got two slightly different responses. The 1000SE does seem to come with metric scales, but the one mail talked about racks, the other just scales.
Anyhow, also like the idea of the extending fence but as you've pointed out you can get essentially the same functionality with a custom MDF fence.
Talking about getting charged through the nose for postage, one place had the miter gauge for ~$99 but wanted to charge something like ~$175 for postage!! Another had the gauge for ~$150 and only wanted to charge ~$59 postage.
Thanks for the opinions and link.Annular Grooved Nails....Ribbed for the Woods Pleasure?

Very timely. Have just come in from the shed where for the last few days I have been using my Incra 1000SE. I can't praise this tool high enough. Contrary to Damian's opinion, I find that the sliding fence is almost worth the cost alone. I have an MDF sacrificial fence mounted on mine, together with ant-slip tape. After my Wixey Digital Table Saw fence it is one of the best add-ons for a tablesaw.
I bought mine at the Adelaide Wood Show, not last year but the year before. I was admiring it at the Timbecon stand, who had a very good special on it. After drooling for a while and fiddling with it on one of their tablesaws I walked away. SWMBO asked "why didn't you buy that?". I replied, "can't justify that much money for just a mitre gauge". Her reply? "if you think you will use it, don't justify it, just buy it!". So I did! Glad I did, great tool.
I later bought the metric conversion kit from PWS (Professional Woodworker Supplies), consisting of new scales and racks. (see bottom of this page) Can't remember how much they were, but not a fortune.
Every time I use this tool, and I use it a lot, I enjoy the accuracy and I have forgotten how much it cost me. Anyway, I am of an age where I work on the SKI principle (Spending the Kids Inheritance), and what's more the kids approve.
Having said that, I did pay a lot less than the current price of $322

Ok, well are you impressed with the incra quality, the millions of preset angle positions or the extendable fence ?
I didn't mean to imply buying an incra miter gauge was a bad idea I was suggesting the 1kse might be overkill. I am prepared to believe I'm wrong though...
My V27 is wonderful quality, but it has I dunno 5 stops which is all I need. As for a fence I thought long and hard about the extendable fence. In the end I figured you can buy them seperately if I later decide I need one. I guess I'm not as confident with miter cuts, so I find a disposable fence reassuring introducing work to the pointy end of my tablesaw, plus the joy of zero clearance.
When I was looking I paid $140US ? as I recall for 2 18" incra rules and a V27 shipped. The V27 is about $50US as opposed to the $100plus for a 1000se, and the 1kse is dearer to ship. I would be surprised if you could land one for under $300au today, while the v27 is about half that or so...I just wasn't convinced the extra was justified. 2c...I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. All of the above, I use the "millions" of preset angle positions regularly, the extendable fence I wouldn't do without. The Incra quality I was already sold on as I already owned the Incra LS17System

As I pointed out in my previous post though, once you use a good tool, not only Incra, you do tend to forget how much you shelled out and the enjoyment goes on for the life of the tool (or your own, whichever comes first)

Very true. I haven't looked recently but I would be surprised with the $ at 66c if you could land a 1kse for much under $300AU buying in the USA.
Ebay looks like $120US, I reckon you could get that to $100US, but they cost about $60US to ship as I recall because they are big and heavy. So say $160US, that $250AU, and that would be a minimum.
Anyway... weekend beckons...I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.
