table saw upgrade - sb-10h or ST-12D both on special at H&F
hi guys
i currently have a trade tools contractor style table saw. its served me well as i have it fitted with a incra fence and dust collector 2. it has a 5/16th arbout and have a woodworker II thin kerf blade (10inch) and a also has a long arbour so i use a dado on it.
the only issue i have is its 1.5hp. i mainly use it for ripping hardwood and even with the WWII blade it bogs down. i have just bought some ironbark (60mm thick) and my saw will struggle to rip it.
so im looking to upgrade to a ca. 3hp cabinetsaw. i only have single phase power (but a 20amp fuse with brand new wiring)
i see the SB-10H is on special at H&F until 3rd august - its down to $1019 (from $1199)

from the reviews i have read on here the saw seems good. 3hp powerfull motor. also the table size is 800mm deep which is perfect as i can buy the XL mount kit for my Incra fence and mount this on the saw (maximum table size of 33inch deep). i believe it is also capable of taking a dado (correct me if im wrong).
does any have this saw and can comment on where this would be the best for my needs? i am inclined towards a 10inch rather than a 12inch because the blades are cheaper (and i have just ordered a hammer n4400 bandsaw so i dont need the table saw to cut very deep)
i have no need to cut sheets as i only cut hardwood (mainly recycled stuff). i dont need a sliding table (i have a bosh tracksaw to rip sheets)
my first choice was originally the ST-12D (also on special) below, however the table depth is 900mm so i wont be able to fit my incra fence. i love the fence!

my budget is up to $3000 so please feel free to recommend something else (single phase) up to this price. my only caveat is it must be capabale of a dado! cant live without this either
thanks andrew

Have you looked at the Jet Deluxe Xacta or Laguna Platinum Table Saws.
Both are a bit more expensive than the Hare & Forbs but have better quality fence and rails and easy change over of the riving knife.
More cast iron and steel as apposed to alloy and aluminum as well as better dust extraction covers around the blade.
Your right about going for a 10" as apposed to 12", 12" blades need allot more HP behind them to keep them from being bogged down in the cut.
Especially if your making a full thickness cut on a piece of dry Red Gum that is as tough as nails.
3HP on a 10" table saw should be fine. Still just watch your feed rate if your doing a full thickness cut.
The other thing you will have to look at is dust extraction.
I don't know what you've currently got but you will need at least a 2HP dust extraction unit for dust extraction on these saw's.
For your health as well as the saw's, you don't want dust clogging up your table saw motor the gearing on the trunnions.
Hope this helps you find the right table saw.
Regards
Ben

thanks ben
after further reviewing this great site. i am now leanign away from the H&F saws i mentioned and inclined towards spending more and buying either the jet saw you mentioned (the xacta tablesaw for 2799) or the tsc-10hb for 1899 or the laguna platinum 250mm
all have the right table size to fit my incra fence and also are 3hp triple belt 10inch. trying to work out if the jet or laguna is worth the extra coin over the tsc-10hb
they all seem like the same saw on paper to me.
ps also i dont have a need for a fence (as i plan on using the incra table saw fence which i already have) so whatever fence it comes with is irrelevant as i will see this. and also i have no need for the riving knife or guard. i remove both and use a micro jig splitter currently which is excellent

Hi again Andrew,
I was looking at the specks of the TSC-10HB, this seems to be a right tilting saw.
Just be weary of this because if you are using the fence op close to the saw blade and you have the blade at an angle you can have problems.
Firstly, the blade is angling towards the fence so you can not bring the fence up close or the blade will cut into your fence.
Secondly, if the blade is angled and you are making a ripping cut using the fence the piece you have just cut has no support and can get jammed between the fence and the blade. This will ether stop the blade and motor (bad), shatter the timber into a million pieces (bad), or worst of all send the piece back at you at a fast pace causing damage to you. (its all bad)
The only time that I would consider a right tilt saw would be if I had a sliding table and using the fence stop on that for my measurements and not the rip fence on the saw.
I short if you are using a table saw as a table saw stick with left tilt, if your mostly using a sliding table on the saw right tilt is OK bit do not rip an angled cut on it.
Do some goggling on this and you will see what i mean.
All so if you are just starting out have a look at www.thewoodwhisperer.com. He has some interesting videos and articles and more importantly, has a video about table saw setup.
Get the sales man to demo the saw, and show you how to set the saw up, if he doesn't know how to don't buy from him.
Woodworking Warehouse and Carba-tec sell the saws you are looking at, and I believe that Woodworking Warehouse sell both Laguna and Jet.
Hope this helps you with your journey in to table saws
Regards
Ben

i decided to go with the jet xacta. went to carbatec today and your right the other model was right tilting.
also re the jet. the first batch they received didnt have the riving knife that moves with the blade (they had one left on special for $2400). the new batch has the riving knife that follows the blade (ie what is commonly referred to as the deluxe model - but apparently this is the standard). i was tossing up between the laguna platinum and the jet, both very similar, but decided on the jet as it has the dust shroud surrounding the blade (also the laguna would have had to be shipped from qld so the cost benefit would have been diminished). also i realised by researching more forums that the laguna is basically the grizzly and its a good saw but the consensus seems to lean towards the jet in the US (although the fence is probably better on the laguna, i have the incra fence anyway)
i may sell my jet xacta fence after i compare it to the incra (or the incra fence) depends which one i like best.
thanks for your assistant benjovi. saw gets delivered friday i just have to smuggle it into the shed without my wife seeing it
they are delivering the saw with a tailgate loader. i was thinking i could use a heavy duty trolley to wheel the crate in (removing as much as i can for weight reduction). will see how i go.
