Default Anyone got a Laguna Platinum TS?

    Hi all,

Just narrowing the field a bit in my TS replacement research and am down to Laguna Platinum 250 OR Jet Xacta Deluxe. Have laid my hands on the Jet but not the Laguna. I've read the Fusion review on here but has anyone got a Platinum? and if so what are your thoughts?

My budget can stretch to the Jet but even with freight the Laguna is $600 cheaper albeit with shorter fence rails and not as good dust collection, but looks like a better fence IMO.

    Thanks
    Redgy

Redgy, I'm really jealous of you new saw. I have a Jet super saw and while I am happy with it now I see some things on the platinum that I really like. First is the 3HP Leeson motor, plenty of power and supposedly bulletproof. Mine was/is a little underpowered. The other is the fence which on the Laguna looks awesome. My Jet came with an eXacta fence which I eventually replaced as it was never satisfactory. The extra cost of doing this was a pain.
Looks like you made the best choice, look forward to hearing about your experience.
You also mentioned dust extraction, no saw with only a 4" dust port will do the job of keeping your workshop dust free.

    Enjoy your new saw.
    Cheers, Ian

Yeah I liked the look of the Xacta deluxe dust collection shrouded around the blade but I didn't like it to the tune of $600 and the Laguna's fence looks good coming over the front of the rail like it does. Will be a major major leap forward for me after having an open style contractor saw for 10 years, albeit I've done a lot of work with it and it's been a good machine.

hmmmm....3HP, cabinet, left tilt, solid wings, rise & fall knife plus a new 2 hp dusty...it's like Xmas eve around here

Hi Redgy. I have a platinum that I bought in January but I have been concentrating on lining a tin garage and setting up a dust collector so I havn't done much with it yet. So far everything looks good and it is cutting very accurately. The fence is really solid and easy to position and does not move out of whack when locking it down like some other saws.

The only thing that I found that is slightly suss is the cast iron wings which are not quite flat - one is out about 3.5 thou. but I don't think it is enough to cause a drama.

The Laguna manual is pretty useless so If you download the manual for the Grizzly G0690 table saw you get about 80 pages of good information which makes setting up much easier.

    Cheers,
    David

Thanks for the tip on the manual safari, I'll hunt that down now and print out before the big day. I'll also check the flatness but as you say I don't know that a couple of thou on a wing is going to upset me too much, after all I've been used to open style wings that didn't even line up properly let alone be anything close to flat

    Cheers

Default Do you have it yet???

Hello, I see you are looking at the Laguna Platinum saw. I was keen on the jet pro shop until I got a email from Jarred at JordsWoodShop Woodworking Podcast and he informed me of the Laguna range of saws are now in Aus. I also live in SA and got a quote for $125 to send it to Adelaide from Gregory's machinery in Qld. Do you have yours yet? are you happy with it? any issues with delivery? Any info would be great as I'm thinking of putting in a order today. Cheers, Ash.

    Hi Ash,

Yep got it last Monday 6 days after ordering....if you order on a Monday you should get it Friday. I haven't given mine a good workout as yet but I am very happy with it so far and a big step up from my contractor saw.

Only delivery issue was that the pallet the saw is bolted to is small and the driver had a normal size pallet truck lifter thing which didn't fit under the saw. So then he was trying to use a normal hand trolley rated at probably 50-80kg? until I stopped him, the thing weighs over 200kg. Eventually we manouvered it onto an empty normal size pallet and then wheeled it down the driveway into my shed....all good. I managed to get it off it's own pallet on my own and setup on my own....but would've been easier with 2 people.

    Cheers

Just realised your freight is $100 cheaper than mine was....check if that's to your door or just to Adelaide.

I bit the bullet and ordered it. The delivery charge is just to the depot in Adelaide. I do deliveries there each week so I'll just pick it up on my way home. I'm excited to finally have a decent table saw on its way. I've been setting my self up with most of the other machines for a workshop but don't have the main tool, the tablesaw! I think 3hp, left tilt, decent fence system etc. should cover everything I need. Thanks for the advice, Ill post pics as soon as I get it. Cheers, Ash.

    Default I got it...

Well a couple of weeks have passed since I took delivery of a Laguna Platinum table saw. I had to drive to Adelaide and pick it up from a trucking depot and they loaded it into the back of my van. I probably should have thought this through as I don't own a forklift and the box was almost at roof height in the van... After a lot of sliding back and forth and some brave moments with a engine crane It was on the shed floor with out incident! There was a bit more to putting it together than I thought but it was good to test out by lunch time. This is my first proper table saw so I don't have anything to compare it to but I'm very happy with it so far. A little fine tuning on the fence and it cuts very accurately. The mitre sled isn't to bad either. Its no incra but it dose the job. Just don't take the increments seriously and it holds true. My first project was to make a mitre sled for box making. This has been a learning curve as I thought it would be easy but I seem to have been caught out by my old square not actually being square anymore. It had me pulling out hair trying to figure out why it wasn't cutting a true 45. I now have a wixey digital protractor on the way... The only thing that's a bit annoying is the dust extraction port is on the right hand side and I have a dust system set up for the left side. More a annoyance for me that anything else. Cheers, Ash.

I've got myself one of these recently, and am very happy with it. I have not done anything serious on it yet, but it was trivial to align everything in comparison with my old contractor saw.

If you are searching for reviews I noticed that the Laguna Platinum table saw is almost identical to the Grizzly G0690. Because of the higher number of the Grizzly sold on the American market there are many reviews on the net for it.

Funny thing about unloading off my ute was that when the cast iron table and electric motor are removed it is reasonably easy to manoeuvre. I had to disassemble it to get it off the ute. I've now got it on a mobile base which makes things easy.

Seriously considering one of these over the Woodman SB1012. My main reservation with the Woodman is the reports of bowed tables. Have you all found your tops to be reasonably flat? Any other general quality issues found thus far?

The table on mine is flat. I checked with my level and it sits flat in all directions on the table and wings with no light visible under, so no issues there.

I built another riving knife for mine yesterday out of 1.7 mm plate to suit my CMT ITK 42 tooth blade. The knife supplied is 0.1 inches thick (2.54 mm) so I needed another.

I set everything up perfectly yesterday (as opposed to quick & roughly) and I guess the only thing which I need to modify is the scale measurement on the fence. The hairline plastic slides inside the frame slightly - 0.5 mm. This I'll fix with a spot of glue.

The other mod yet to occur is fabrication of new fence rails to suit the Jet sliding table I recently acquired.
