Angry Magic smoke and table saw motors

The magic smoke escaped from my table saw motor this morning. I had been thinking recently about replacing the drive belt because it was 30 years old and starting to crumble.

It now appears the 30 yo motor was in about the same condition as the belt! As much as I'd like an excuse to go out and buy a nice shiny $2k machine, for the limited use it gets I think a nice new shiny motor is more appropriate.

The nearest match (to the original 2HP, 19mm shaft) at Hare and Forbes motor is $264 on sale. There are some cheaper motors available for around the $160 mark on ebay but all the cheapies seem to have 24mm shafts.

Anybody got a recommendation for where to buy a new motor, new or reconditioned?

I’m no expert but you spoke of belt replacement which means there is a pulley involved so can you get a pulley the correct size to suit the 24mm shaft of the $160 motor and still come in less than the $264 hare and Forbes?

I could be barking up the wrong tree

    cheers

Conon have a HD 2HP motor for $229 - it says its for compressor use but it should work fine on a table saw.
    Maybe give them a call

Check out you'r local motor rewind places in yellow pages too.
Long as its the same RPM, same pulley size and it can be made to mount on you'r saw it will do.

Nah, maybe I'll just mount my never used hand held circular saw under the table and turn it into a Triton on steroids. Depth of cut might be an issue.

Motor rewinders seem to be another forsaken trade around here. They appear to have mainly morphed into mobile pump repair vans and I suspect just swap out new motors for old rather than do rewinds. Although I think there's still a guy with a shop up at Bundall, I'll give him a call.

Are old motors worth anything for scrap?

It was fairly obvious a motor replacement was not sensibly on the cards, afterall the old saw only cost me $100 in the first place. A broken fence and a jerry rigged splitter made things even more unworthy of a motor replacement.

For the last few weeks I have been been watching gumtree and facebook for second hand saws as well as perusing the local offerings for new saws. My conclusion was the 2nd hand market is WAYYYY over priced, reasonable (single phase) machines on gumtree were listing and apparently selling for approx 90% of new prices for stuff that was well worn and 10+ years old! I even think some of that gear was probably bought when the Aus$ was at parity with the US$ and they were effectively being listed for resale at the original purchase price (or more).

The best new option for me seemed to be the small footprint H&F ST254. I had a slight preference for the TS250RS, but realistically I don't have the floor space available in my new downsized workshop for the slider.

I was resigned to buying a new 10" saw although the old contractor saw was 12". A Timbecon 12" hybrid had looked value for money and interesting since it was substantially cheaper than the H&F 12" offerings, but I was concerned about Timbecon not being local. Anyhow, Timbecon had a flash sale today that dropped the price for the hybrid another $150 and now being sub $2K delivered to the GC I decided to bite the bullet and ordered one today. Fingers crossed I've made the right decision! It's currently back ordered so I have no idea when it will actually arrive.

If you were thinking a bit different and could make up a cabinet for a JobSite Sawstop, this one is for sale: Sawstop table saw jss-230a50i | Tool Storage & Benches | Gumtree Australia Playford Area - Elizabeth | 1274437400

That's a long drive from the Gold Coast for something with an unknown history. At 2/3 the price of a new one I'd be wondering about it's desirability even if it was from the CashConverters just around the corner.

    Gday Fuzzie

I recently bought the Timbecon Hybrid 12" saw.
So far so good, no disappointments yet.
Took my time setting it up, I have it on a mobile base which helps in a small workshop space.
    Cheers
