Major Combination Machine Manufacturers
G'Day Folks
I'm establishing a new woodworking shop and wish to purchase, preferably a 5 in 1 machine, i am reluctantly willing to spend between $10,000 to $16,000.00 to achieve this.
However i'm "very green", that is new to this whole process, and not even aware what is available in the market place. Can anybody suggest a few manufactures that i could look at.
I have already traveled to the Minimax showroom in Melbourne and indeed the Felder showroom to look at some Hammer machines.
I studied the Laguna website, but only seen a picture of the corresponding Robland machine.
Can anybody suggest other machines i might consider in this price range, my intention is make furniture but the space in my shop is restricted so a combo seems to offer the best compromise.
I particularly interested in hearing from people with "Hands on experience" with such machines, who offer a critical performance based opinion.
Cheers Woodsy11

All combo's have their good and bad points. It may be price, tolerances, spare parts, after sales service, design or material. Keep an eye out for good second hand machines. There are some good buys out there. A couple of years back I managed to pick up a Robland NLX 310 for half new price. It had not been used as the government contract it was purchased for had fallen through. Probably not the best machine out there but hey it serves me well.

Hi Woodsy11,
I went through the same exercise in 2007 and in the end bought a new MiniMax CU 300 Classic with a 1600mm sliding stroker waggon and the mortiser attachment. I was very taken by the Felder but the cost was much higher and with the MiniMax Gabbett sent their engineer down to assist with the initial setup (up to 3hrs) which was very helpful. I have been making furniture as a hobby and find the machine to be excellent especially being able to break down accurately 2400x1200 sheets with very good repetitive accuracy. I also have made extensive use of the spindle moulder but I would recommend you should have a power feed fitted for safety and good quality output. I have found it easier to leave the jointer set up for regular use and since bought a separate thicknesser as the original unit was a little lightweight for doing large slabs. If I was starting again I would likely have separate machines with the main focus on the saw unit with some electronic height and angle setting facilities. With a lot of today,s machines where space is a problem it is easy to fit them on a mobile base to easily move to a work space. The other machine i mostly use is my bandsaw with a 25mm blade for ripping. My friend who is a professional furniture make has a Felder setup that he is very happy with.
Cheers,
Paintman

First hand experience with Felder gear.
I've got a Felder KF700 (combination Saw and Spindle Moulder) and also a Felder ADAD741 (planer thicknesser).
essentially, that's their combo machine, in the 700 series (green) but I've got them in 2 separate components.
I can highly recommend them and would rather a 2nd hand 700 series than a new Hammer unit . The Hammer's are good, but the 500, and 700's are much better.
You can often pick up a 2nd hand 700 series from Stefan at Emu Plains. it's worth discussing with him (though he'd rather sell you a new one, no doubt )
I have no connection with Felder whatsoever, but I am definitely one very happy customer and will gladly recommend their products. I just loooooooooove using mine.

combination machine
Hi Woodsy, Are you still in the market for a good combination machine? I have a 5 in one cassadei combi' which is built like a tank. It has a planing/thicknessing capacity of 350mm. & a sliding table. It is on a mobile base. It is model no. e350, & its for sale. You don't need to spend the kind of money you mentioned for a top quality machine; & these hold their value well. PM me if you want to know more. Cheers leecab.
