Default Motor changing headaches and other conversion woes

At the mens shed we had some surplus equipment and we gave most of it to another mens shed but one of the members agreed to purchase a small 2HP 3phase combo machine (10" saw/6" planer thicknesses.

The member doesn't have 3 phase at his place so, on behalf of the Mens shed, I agreed to swap the motor over to a single phase 2HP motor and get it into a working state

Strip out motor and old 3 phase switch gear.
Purchase used single phase motor on GumTree, it ran fine at the sellers place but when I got it home it drew far too high a current and after about 5 minutes it got very hot just free wheeling.
I inform buyer of this and he wants a new motorr.
Order new mew motor which has same shaft size (19mm) as the old one, but has a 6mm keyway whereas the old one was a 3/16" so enlarge keyway in pulley to fit.
New motor is also slightly taller than old motor so have to cut away some of the cabinet to fit the motor in and cut new slots for motor mounting.
Fit new switch and test - all good - go to fit blade to test it out and find the outboard blade washer and nut are missing.
Nut looks like its BSF or UNF 3/4" LH thread - now I have to run around and find one of these.

Now I admit I like a challenge but I ran out of enthusiasm on this one a long time ago.

Well BobL at least it is in a good cause. Does sound you have had to go above and beyond. At least when it is all done you can put it down to "character building".

    Regards

    Hi Bob,
went through a similar exercise earlier this year when I replaced my 3Hp sp motor with a 5Hp sp motor on my CT 15" thicknesser. A lot of cutting and welding of new motor mounting frame, new drive pulley,switchgear,25amp power feed etc. All good now and much better unit. In the USA I note they have the same machine with either 3Hp of 5Hp SP motors (220V). I am sure the 5Hp is a better match with the helical cutter head that I use.
    Cheers,

Saturday morning I made it to the speciality fastener store just before closing - didn't have time to go back to the mens shed to check the actual nut size so I bought both the BSF and UNF 3/4" LHT,
$5 for the UNF and $28 for the BSF.

Made it to the Shed on Monday - guess what - RH thread UNF of course, so back to speciality fastener store and the RHT one cost 75c

Do it's more or less done. I found an old blade for it but it had a 7/8" hole and so I had to turn up a bush as I couldn't find one that fit.

    So it's done and dusted.

I learnt a lot from doing jobs for friends like your job. Lesson one, step back from the line saying "don't know how to do that sort of thing", then offer advise, and do it anyway. Lesson two, if you think it's going to take X hours/days to do, allow double, we don't work as fast as we used too.
