    Thanks for that.

Your tag under your name says "Wide Bay Burnett" - I'm located in Maryborough should you be passing through sometime.

The one you need is called either Rust Remover or Rust Dissolver - doesn't leave any residue at all. Check the label to make sure it is phosphoric acid. You should be able to get it at AutoPro, Repco, places like that.

The brand name is Ranex, you can also use it for cleaning a range of metals.
You can also use it for soldering stainless steel as a flux.

I apply with fine steel wool, but I guess any kind of scourer pad will work. It might even remove the staining from using CLR.

Thoroughly clean off when done, then apply your rust preventative of choice. I use either paste wax (Ubeaut of course.....), or G15 is very good too.
...but be careful that you only use it on REAL STEEL!! I decided to use some of it to clean up all my old dividers and calipers including the rusty old ones I inherited from Dad. All was looking good until all my el-cheapo sets all fell apart . Whatever material the tube spring on top was made of just turned to powder in the rust-dissolver - but at least all the Moore & Wrights are looking good now
