where to purchase a panel saw
Gday,
Im looking at buying a panel saw and dont know where to start looking. Does anybody know of any websites or locations (nsw/sydney) which deal in used machinery, or know of a good new machine that is affordable. Or perhaps any businesses closing up wishing to sell a panel saw. My ideal is an altendorf but at price range of about $18K new, is a bit out of my league at the moment.
Regards,
Mickem

i closed down my joinery shop about 12 months ago and i was going to keep the machinery to reopen at a latter date.
i have since changed my mind and getting rid of all my equipment.
this saw is worth allot more and an inspection will prove it. it is worth at least $16 k, but it is taking up to much room in my shed.
i have my next project lined up and the wife wont let me start it till all this other gear goes.

G'day Mickem
I have just gone through the painful experience of dealing with salesmen who are trying to tell you that they have the better machine and how to not buy a competitors product because they may go out of business, etc, etc. I started at an all manual machine in the price range opf 20K and the one i would pick is the Felder 700 series. Depending on the options you want will depend on whether you pay more or less than 20K.
I then started looking at machines that had digital features, motorised rip fence, etc. I was told buy the Altendorf salesman that the price was around 52K for an altendorf F45. It looked like a good machine but didnt have a lot of time on the machine.
I wouldnt buy their cheap lower range of machines as they are not built in Germany and the quality is just not their. Why pay 20K for the altendorf name when the machine is made in china. I'm not an expert on the topic but i think that all if not most of the Felder is made in Austria. Not sure if the Altendorf is put together in chine or whether the machines components are made in china. Either way i wasnt impressed with it.
Anyway i bought a Martin T74 so i dont have shares in the Felder company but if it wasnt to be a Martin it was going to be one of the Felder saws. I looked at the SCM machines and i wasnt impressed with the finish. Dont remember exactly what model i saw but the digital cross cut stops seemed to have a plastic housing, seemed very flimsy when i used it so it didnt impress me at all. As i mentioned not sure on the model but its list price was around 30-40K. So its not their cheap machines.
Anyway like i said im not an expert, just relaying my recent experience at buying a panel saw.Last edited by HTM; 22nd June 2009 at 10:22 AM. Reason: spelling

Dear Mickem,
This is a link to the "Panel-Saws" section of what is probably the best website for 2nd-hand Machinery in Australia:

Good Luck,

Assuming you've got 3 phase have a look on ebay. Lots of good older machines come up regularly and go for a pittance.
With the downturn cabinetmakers aren't making money and there are regular sales of ex shop equipment. You need to know what your looking at but the savings are substaintial.
There are specialised machine movers, H&F put me onto one mob. Machines can be moved across town or across the country and they have cranes etc to load/unload. And insurance.
I personally find some of the prices on machines4u, er, optimistic. Course I mostly look at the metalwork stuff...

G'day Mickem
If your after something that will handle a full 2400 x 1200 sheet cheaply can I recommend the Carbatech 12SS.
At 5K retail it scribes and I can vouch for full sheet handling. Taiwanese build though of quite good quality. Sliding table is as accurate as you could want. Available in single or three phase.
Happy as with mine.Nili Illegittimi Carborundum
