Thread: My Push Stick

The most critical aspect of any push stick is the amount of stick in FRONT of the hook, it stops the blade from lifting the material up and throwing it back at you, and where possible position the toe closer to the fence than the heel, it keeps the material against the fence

Yep!! I like it. I have the Adobe Creative Suite, so I design in Illustrator, that's why it's fancy-like!!

Yes, it is important to ensure pressure is towards the fence

You can also use a push stick for the naughty left hand that wants to do it's own thing to push against the fence.

Since seeing the push "stick" used by Marc Adams at his woodworking school, I've used the same basic shape in different thicknesses ever since. It was featured in FWW back in 2013.

The beauty of a push block which only takes a couple of minutes to knock up, is that there are never any qualms about it being cut up in the pursuit of safety, as reproduction is a non issue.

Hey LanceC, cool push block, I'll have to make one of those, I created an Onshape drawing of this for anyone to reference - Onshape. You can get the measurements by using the measure tool and if you want to modify it, just create an account and save it as your own (I think that works).

Here’s mine, I’ve been using it for some years now, made from red cedar. I just love it, it keeps the timber from flying back, not that happens often but is comfortable in the hand

Good job. One of the things I really like about Fine Woodworking Magazine is that a lot of the contributors run schools or whose livelihood is from woodworking. As such the primary concern for them is cost effectiveness and functionality. While there is nothing wrong with fancy and beauty (after all it is our hobby, and whatever brings us joy), sometimes I just want a proven design to go with.

OK Lance you've inspired me. Same design as yours (thanks for the link) but I've added gripper stuff on the base and an adjustable hook on the back so when I chew up the hook I replace it with another. I made 5 spares. Works well.
