    Default Rust Protection

My shed is located only a few hundred metres from the ocean in sub tropical central Qld, the northern end of the Wide Bay.
Most winds here are from the Eastern section of the compass so the problem I have is that the air is humid and salty, a perfect recipe for growing rust.

I have tried most all of the recognised rust prevention methods to keep the rust from the table saw and band saw cast iron tables but all have given poor protection.

Johnsons paste wax is recommended by many as the best but even with a few applications well buffed in after 4 to 6 days the dreaded brown stain appears and has to be removed with lots of elbow grease.

The only thing that seemed to keep the rust at bay was a liberal application of Inox spray, leave it wet and then clean down before using.
This worked but is messy and inconvenient.

However I think that I now may have the answer to rust protection.
Researching the problem on the net I found that in the US a product called Boeshield T9 had a good reputation so I obtained a spray can to try.

Boeshield T9 was developed by the Boeing Company for protection of aircraft components.

Anyhow I gave the cast iron a thorough cleaning to be sure that no rust remained and sprayed a layer of Boeshield T9 on to the surface and then wiped it in with a paper towel so no wet excess was evident.
This was done just prior to Christmas, the machinery has been used several times, no further application of Boeshield has been applied and there is no sign of rust, not even that fine brown stain.
To be on the safe side I will apply another coat this week but it does look like I may have beaten the rust problem.

The only down side is minor, the table does not feel a slippery as when waxed but I have not really noticed any drag on ply sheets.

Hope this info may help someone else with similar problems.

    Regards
    Bob

    Thanks for the tip Bob.

Admittedly my rust problems are not as bad as yours but I do struggle with keeping tools rust free. I have found by far the best method is to keep things covered. There are tools I've not touched in years (too many chisels ) and the ones which have been sitting in their original box have virtually no rust, the while ones I use most often and are most exposed to the elements need regular de-rusting and cleaning. For the TS I use an old thermal lined curtain draped over the cast iron table top with the blade guard still on.

Saying all this I've never tried Boeshield T9, so I may have to find myself a can/bottle and try it out.

I could only find one importer using Google, an importer of cycles.
Cycle repair shops use it in their workshops.
I got mine from the local cycle store in Bundaberg.
$30.00 here but around $9.00 in the US

Just searched for it on Fishpond and there are a handful of options. It does say it ships from a USA supplier.

Default Where did you get the Boeshield?

I've seen it advertised but can't find a source that will ship to OZ.

My shed is outside Noosa, 10 k from the sea but still very damp. A vendor at the last working with wood show sold me Ferro-pak G15 as a rust protector but all it did was encourage that lite brown film.

Boesheild suppliers for aus here http://www.bicyclepeddler.com.au/dealers.php (look for the T9 logo in the picture) I get mine via the same agent but in nz.

I'm a big fan of boeshield, my shed gets pretty damp in winter and it helps massively. I usually give things that need slipperlyness (handplanes) a going over with renaissance wax after.
