Default Saw & Safety - never cut off a limb

    Dear all,

who has had a close encounter with a sawblade, cut off a finger, took a chunk out of their hand? Many of us have - every woodshow confirms it, just look around.

I've subscribed to Forestry news, forestry jobs - Friday Offcuts for a long time, in the latest edition I found this short video clip.

Forestry news, forestry jobs - Friday Offcuts

Pretty amazing, wish I had that in place when I stuck my fingers into a planer 30+ years ago, ok - this is for a table saw but the mind boggles thinking it could be a standard feature on all woodworking gear?

    Just amazing.....

The Sawstop has been posted, argued, reargued, lauded, poked and pried, calculated, chewed and ridiculed at least umpteen times on this forum. Do a search for SawStop and see what you come up with.

That is no doubt a great safety feature, what I find interesting is that not long ago table saws were sold in the USA without guards or riving knives, now I hear that the inventor of this saw stop is trying to have his system made complusory on all saws sold??
    Is this a fact?

I heard he had his day in court and failed.

Latest I heard, it was going to be made compulsory in California and it was an educated guess that manufacturers would not just make them for California so it would trickle down to the other states.
There was, however, strong objections to the proposal.
    Just imagine this:
    Sawstop compulsory
    Riving knife and guard voluntary.
Is that what they call "Common Sense"?
Every day is better than yesterday

    Cheers

Yep been discussed ad nausem. You can make more money out of saw stops and fixing / replacing written off saw blades, replacement components & new table saws then you can outta selling retro fit riving knives & guards and teaching users how to use them correctly & safely!

Another case of address the symptoms not fix the fundamental hazard or cause - fingers should never be any where near an unguarded blade or a guarded one for that matter!

I wonder how many takes it took to get one without the inventor sh**ing himself sticking his finger into the blade. I notice he very cautiously crept up on it and didn't throw his hand into it either. Maybe he is not that confident its 100% foolproof!
