    Default New Saws

    Gents,

I've been reading these threads regularly as I researched what 10" cabinet saw to buy. Last Friday I arrived at Carbatec Springvale, interested to have a look at their TSC-10HB and their TS-10L 1PH. When I arrived, there was no parking space because they were unloading four forty foot containers, which turned out to be full of a whole new range of Chinese made saws, apparently 16 different models.

The manager showed me the mocked up pages for this year's catalogue which includes these saws, and I was very interested. They have contractors' saws and cabinet saws, left or right tilting blades, riving knives that rise and fall with the blade, and an optional coating that prevents the cast iron from rusting. It is a goldy colour. They also have two different sets of rails, standard and extra long. End of the story I bought one, apparently the first one sold in Australia, since this shipment into Melbourne was the first anywhere. I'm sitting here now writing this and waiting for the truck to deliver it. I'll let you know how it goes straight out of the box. They certainly look the part and are worth considering if you are looking for a new saw.

    cheers

    Kevin

It would be very good if you could add a picture also.

I think the gold coating on the cast iron top, You are referring to, is a Titanium coating. There is a company here in Japan, just started selling Chinese made tablesaws, with the Titanium top.

I hope so ,the new Woodfast 10" saw has the sliding table right next to the blade ,I have been waiting for some one to offer one of these at an affordable price.
The latest issue of Australian Woodworker has the add on the inside of the back cover .
The saw is model WTS-250rc @ 1149.00 buckaroos.
Was going to call Woodfast in Adelaide this week ,but have been flat out at work.
Its not on their website yet.

I too am researching 10" cabinet saws but am fearful of finishing up with a few hundred more kilograms of junk. I´m interested to hear what you purchased and why you did so. Even more interested to hear what you think of it when it´s all put together.
    Cheers, Jeff

I saw the new Woodfast 10" TS at CT on Sat. It has the sliding table that goes right next to the blade as stated above. Has 3HP motor in a cabinet. At $995 looks OK except for a very narrow sliding table.

C/tec Melbourne has had these in stock since late last year, I reported on them then.

You're right the sliding table is very narrow.

As said abovem, looking forward to the 2008 CT cattledog with interest.

    Hi Les,

No, the yellow Woodfast machines were there, already on display. These Chinese machines are blue and white, a full range, and although they will run parallel for a while, making a huge Carbatec saw range, I gather they are intended to replace some of the existing Taiwanese-built range as these have escalated rapidly in cost. Sorry if I sound as if I am promoting these saws, not at all, just blowing the horn on the new models. Until the new catalogue comes out they are going to be only able to be seen in the flesh.

I have unpacked mine and spent yesterday morning assembling it, lining all the tables up and getting the fence rails in the right place etc. I haven't made sawdust yet. There is an extension table that sticks out the back of the saw for ripping long pieces. I like the look of everything so far, except the blade guard and riving knife which are pretty average. My twenty odd year old contractor's saw has a very similar guard, but built from more robust materials.

My only other complaint is that the "instruction book" does not have one word of instruction in it. It is a few pages of exploded views of components. Basically just a parts list. Some assembly instructions would have saved me a lot of time and rework in fiddling with the fence rails etc. I didn't think it was legal to sell equipment that can take off limbs without so much a s a safety guide. Oh well, I got around it in the end.

Unfortunately I don't have any experience in posting photos to this forum. Can anyone point me in the direction of some tips?

    cheers

    Kevin

The sliding table on this saw is more or less for cutting mitres not sheet material.
I think this is more along the lines of a European style table saw.
Which is what I have been looking for.
I just have to convince the missus (difficult )and make some room in my shed.(resonably easy )

    Dear Kevin,

Is there a model designation on the ID plate somewhere on the machine? Most of the generic models will use the same designations regardless of which livery they are appearing in. Be humane; give us all at least a model designation to go on, and then we can do some Googling in Chinglish (the suspense could cause a fatality or two otherwise...)

    Best Wishes,
    Batpig.

    Default At Last All Revealed

    Hi Gents,

I'm sorry to have started this thread and then gone quiet, but I've had an interesting few days. I originally ordered the base model saw, with a right leaning blade and 36" rails. The price of this saw was $1,795.

Just before it was due for delivery I received a phone call from Simon, the manager of the Springvale Carbatec operation to tell me that contrary to what he had advised me when I viewed the first machine unpacked (a top of the line model, left leaning blade, protective coating, rise and fall riving knife etc.) the riving knife on the basic model I had ordered was fixed in height, although it does rotate when changing the angle of the blade. He very kindly offered to supply the left leaning blade model with rise and fall knife at no extra charge. Of course I was stoked!

The machine arrived the next day, and a friend and I unpacked and assembled it. Not until I finished it and installed a blade and the guard did I realise it was the right leaning blade model with the fixed knife. Bugger! By now Carbatec were closed for the weekend. I didn't know what to do, because in fact I had received the machine I actually ordered. I wasn't hopeful of getting anything changed, especially as delivery had cost $113.

I rang Simon early on Monday. He apologized profusely, sent out a truck that afternoon with the correct machine and retrieved the original one. On top of that he sent along one of his staff to assemble the new machine with me. I was more than happy with that response.

The machine I finished up with is a model CTH-110L 1PH. It will sell for $200 more than the base model I ordered, so around $1,995. Yesterday I bought a copy of American Woodworker, and Lo and Behold on the back cover was a picture of my new saw. It is marketed in America by Laguna Tools. You can see it on their web site www.lagunatools.com They call it their Platinum Series Tablesaw and don't appear to offer all the variants that Carbatec do. The model in their photo appears to be the left leaning blade model without protective coating, but with the longer 50" rails. They don't appear to have the outfeed rip table on theirs though. Their price of US$1,995 makes Carbatec's look very reasonable!

I've taken a few happy snaps and will attempt to Photoshop them down to a small file size. Hopefully I will succeed in posting them with this write up. The quality of the cabinet finish, the large, solid chrome control wheels, the very heavy duty trunion mechanism, 3 hp 15 amp motor, three belt drive system and beautifully polished cast iron tables are a joy to behold. I don't want to use it and get it dirty! The fence is very smooth in operation and has that funny plastic on each side that I keep seeing referred to in these forums as "breadboard" material. It is a very heavy piece of kit. I was also very happy with the mitre gauge. It has a similar flip up length stop to the Kreg aftermarket gadget that I was contemplating buying, but having seen this little beauty, I can save my money. It is all aluminium, with the upright fence part having t-slots for easy adjustment. The protractor has spring loaded stops at 90o 45o etc.
