Sherwood TS250SC Motor Problems?
Hi all,
I bought a new Sherwood TS250SC around 5+ years ago from Timbecon, having done only weekend work and that very intermittendly. Saw has been difficult to start for a long time requiring a flick with the push stick. During recent heat waves ripping some 60mm hardwood stock the motor winding burnt out.
From the early days it was labouring cutting 33mm HMR particleboard with a new 80 teeth blade, it was labouring cross cutting 60mm thick hardwood with a 80 and a 64teeth blade, it was labouring ripping with a 48 teeth blade.
Has anyone experienced problems with the motor?
The original motor is a 2.1kW 2-Pole single phase unit running ~2800rpm with face mounting B14. Diameter 155mm, 255mm long, 16mm diameter 30mm long shaft with 100mm p.c.d screw mounting around an 80mm spigot, weighing approx 13.7kg. Capacitor start, induction run. Capacitor tested ok.
Checking many Australian distributed motors reveals the only size similar is an 80M frame with 1.1 or at best 1.5kW.
All 2.2kW motors I found so far are a 90L frame, with a diameter of ~180mm and length 325-365mm weighing around 25kg, shaft size 24mm and 50mm long, 95mm spigot with 115mm p.c.d. screw mounting.
I am looking for a suitable motor for this saw - anyone got any ideas? ( fitting a 90L would simply require too many modifications)
If the original motor is 2.1kW why is it 11kg lighter than most 2.2kW units on the market? Anyone got any thoughts?
Has anyone else found problems with their motor? Other distributors like Carbatec/Jet offer what seems to be the identical saw/motor/assembly.
I was happy with the saw for the home workshop use except the motor problems. Did I just happen to get a lemon as the motor seemed to be underpowered from the early days?

The only thought that springs to mind is that the 2.1kW is a little optimistic of the manufacturers. You also mentioned that it always struggled a bit, and the fact that it eventually burnt out both point to it being a little underdesigned. Personally, I wouldn't be too surprised if a replacement 1.5kW motor ends up working just as well as the original even though it's spec is more conservative.
