Thread: New table saw

So late last week I had a huge amount of help from Evanism and my father in law to muscle this hammer c3 31 beast into my garage. It's a fair upgrade from my contractors metabo ts 250.

Havent got power to it yet but getting an electrician to put in a 20amp plug soon enough. It has 3 x 4HP motors in it

It came with few spare 12 " blades for the table saw. A set of cutters for the spindle moulder and other accessories. It came with the upgraded helix cutters for the jointer and thicknesser

Can't wait to get it up and running. Was able to have a play with it at previous owners house and absolutely love the build quality and functionality of this machine

Will take more photos soon and give a more thorough review.

You can feel quality when you see this machine. What amazes me is that it is more than half a ton, and delbs can move it around shed with one hand!

Spindle moulder. Havent had a chance to use it yet but I love the versatility of this thing. Can fit my existing router bits even a sanding kit

I love the hammer / Felder catalogue a little too much I think

Once it's all set up and running will do some more reviews. Yeah I love that I can move this thing around so easy. It's amazing how easy it is.

I've got an older model of the same machine (mine is green). I haven't had the chance to use it nearly as much as I'd like, but every time I do it impresses me. I haven't used the spindle moulder at all yet as I don't have any kit for it. I like your helix blades for the jointer/thicknesser - I'd like to upgrade mine to those when I can afford it. And I'll be really interested to read your comments on the fence. That's the only component on mine that I'm not terribly impressed with, and I'd like to upgrade to a later version if the latest fences are better (which I suspect they must be). Look forward to seeing your reviews.

I've seen an older model fitted out with all the accessories a while ago at the nsw hammer shop front for a real nice price but it was 3 phase and not an option for me. The older models look great I think and I'm sure are very dureable

As I have plenty of router bits and a decent router set up I'm not actually going to use the spindle moulder yet either. In the photo I'm actually taking it off. I'll look into getting the sanding accessories as they would be more useful for me.

As I haven't been able to power the thing on at my place yet I've been going over it with a fine tooth comb and yes I agree I'm not that impressed by the fence yet!. It doesn't seem that smooth to slide when attached to the saw and I can't get it set up right on the jointer edge as I see it in the workshop manual. Funny enough there are articles on the jointer and the fence but not together, only separate configurations. I'm sure it's me not configuring it right so I'm still going to play around with it

But like you say I can see another model different to mine in the catalogue so that would be interesting to see if there's a difference. I'll see what Stefan in Sydney says

I'd like to get the aluminium handle for the thicknesser handle and the digital gauge also. That doesn't seem too expensive to get.

What year model is yours? Mine was built on 21st may 2012, still a baby

Anyone know why the crosscut fence numbering starts at 9? The hammer rep said all hammer machines do.

It doesnt make sense to me

I reckon it used to start at 0 or 1, but the previous owner might have forgotten to use a sacrificial fence and accidently cut off the end of the fence. I've nearly done it a few times with my crosscut fence.

Learn to love mdf sacrificial fences.

Well yeah when you mention that when the saw first arrived I agreed with you. I mention this to the hammer rep and flat out said "all new hammers come like that" I then asked why and what purpose it serves as it sounds silly to me and he hasn't replied.

Nah unfortunately not. I still havent received an answer from hammer as to why this is the case. It has to be wrong i cant think of any reason why a fence that is so accurate to the blade starts at 9cm. Im going to cut and install a new one i think.

Could be a safety thing. Anything smaller places hand too close to the blade?

So turns out (thanks to the fog guys) that the cross cut fence is installed in the wrong position. It needs to be installed at the front of the sliding table so the cut will have table first thrn materisl approaching the blade. Thrn once the fence is offset 9cm from the blade the flip stop will be my way to measure accuracy. Its a safety thing and apparantly its popular in euro. Thanks everyone for the suggestions

So finally got 20amp plug installed along side upgrading whole switch board for the house to include RCD's (for my flip switching daughter) and after some minor adjustments of the safety switches on the unit it came alive!

Finally got word back from Feldler regarding why my fence starts at 9cm, turns out its across the board for Hammer, Felder and Format 4 machines. Obviously i wasnt aware of this as i was a Metabo user before this and my cross cut fence started at 0 so here i am thinking that the previous owner chopped off nearly 9cm of the fence but no. the response was

Our Hammer fences start at 9 cm
Our Felder fences start at 16 cm
Our Format4 fences start at 20cm

We do not have fences that start at 0

So anyway i got so excited i wanted to throw every bit of timber i own at this thing. I got this piece of wood (species unknown) that i have had salvaged from an old desk for some time now and wanted to dress it. I only did 2 passes on the Silent power helical head 12" jointer and came out like this

I had a friend with me while i was doing this and couldnt believe how quiet the jointer is. Compared to my older dewalt thicknesser i had with standard blades i dont even need to wear earmuffs. id love to run a decibel test on the two or another unit as the dewalt is no longer in my possession.

Still haven't used the spindle moulder as i use my router table still and dont have a power feeder for the moulder (yes im scared of the darn thing) and still yet to use the thicknesser but as it uses the same cutter block as the jointer i have a good idea of what the results are going to be like.

Someone will have to pry this machine from my dead cold hands, best machine i probably will ever own
