    Default Table saw opinions

    Hey all,

I have had bad luck with my search for a new table saw over the last 12 months. I missed out on a two second hand Powermatic PM2000's in the space of a few months, then I finally decided on the Carbatec TSCE-10L to find out they have stopped bringing them into Australia and that they had them on sale for $1999 - I just missed out. Not to worry, I have more options.

I just wanted your opinion on the following table saws and which one you'd choose. I plan to take my woodworking to the next level next year with some big projects planned which is why i'm upgrading my Bosch GTS 10.

Sawstop cabinet saw Sawstop industrial cabinet saw - Australia & New Zealand | GABBETT MACHINERY - Woodworking Machinery Sales Australia & New Zealand

Powermatic PM2000 (can't find a supplier in Australia that stock them though - if anyone knows please let me know ) Gregory Machinery - Table Saws - Powermatic PM2000

Hammer K3 winner HAMMER woodworking machines Panel Saws Spindle Moulders Planers Clean-Air Dust Extractors

Jet Xacta Jet 10" Left Tilting Arbor Xacta Tablesaw : CARBA-TEC

If I had to choose one it would probably be the Powermatic PM2000 - build in castors, riving knife, excellent fence and the build quality is excellent, however as I mentioned I can't seem to find one in Australia.

    Thanks,

    Andy

Talked to Carba-Tec people (in ADL) a few weeks back. They were quite sure that Powermatic stuff well be available in a month or two.

    Hey mate,
Thanks for the reply and welcome to the forum.

Iv'e spoken with Sydney and Brisbane Carbatec and they have no idea when they are getting the Powermatic saws in. All they could tell me is that it will be next year. I'm in no rush as I won't be ready to buy until the end of the year so I might call them in a month or so to see whether there are any updates for there arrival.

Has anyone got any opinions on the other saws mentioned in my original post (please, I don't want another Sawstop heated thread )

    Cheers,
    Andy

    Default table saw options

Groeneaj i have a sawstop industrial cabinet saw very pleased with it.You can make your own mind up about the safety aspect I did. If you go to newwoodworker.com sawstop you will find a very good review. In america it is called sawstop professional cabinet saw 3hp.

While talking to Carba-Tek I enquired about Powermatic brand in general. Just did not want to draw too much attention that I'm after PM2000. At the time they looked quite confident. May be they just were ill informed? May be Carba-Tek people in NSW and QLD know better. How knows. Just wait and see. Xacta model they are offering at this stage is disappointing. Deluxe model would be a big step forward, iMHO, but not here yet.

Stopsaw is not bad, but relays on electronics too much, for my liking, at least. As software and hardware design is my full time job, I wouldn't trust my fingers to it. Clear head, full attention and good practice is the best safety feature for the cost.

    Would have to agree.

Its like all these new vehicles with park assist, break assist, etc, etc, what are they going to do when the electronics fail.

I'm also in SA and also interested in the Xacta Deluxe ... probably 52"
Any other interested parties? .... if there are enough for a minimum order, Carbatech may consider buying in the Deluxe model.
Like you, I consider the standard Xacta a bit ordinary.

Someone from Carba-Tec QLD called me on my mobile offering Xacta model instead of TSCE10L one I enquired earlier. My replay was that without proper riving knife Xacta model is no match to TSCE and they will have hard time to sale them. He also was not able to give any info regarding availability of PM2000. You know, usual crap about talking to manager and getting back to you. I think that what we see know is a big step backward. With Catbatec saws on offer vs basic Xacta models the previous Jet distributor did not do too well with them. Now Jet wants to kill two birds with one stone: improve sales of underrated models at premium price by kill more successful competitor.

Good lack to them. Unless they improve soon enough I will take my business elsewhere. Leda saws look more attractive by the minute and they are Adelaide based.

Believe it or not but CarbaTec keeps confusing people even more. As up to date 5 CT's staff in SA and QLD confirmed that TSCE-10L has been deleted and even was on sale last month for 1999, but still,it is published again in today's catalog.

My guess is copy and paste Evil strikes again. What a waste of paper.

Addressing the original question, the K3 is the best on all levels especially safety but will beat the other on all other grounds as well.

So the Jet 10" xacta saw has been out for a little while now, has anybody had a chance to have a look at this saw? If so what are your impressions? I'm looking forward to having a good look in a few weeks, but i'm just after other peoples opinions so far.

Jet 10" Left Tilting Arbor Xacta Tablesaw : CARBA-TEC

    Many thanks,
    Andy

No matter how long or hard you look into this particular saw it's hard to miss the fact that it does not have raising/falling splitter/riving knife. Functionally, it's similar to TSC-10HB, which $700 cheaper. So far not a word on Xacta Deluxe or Powermitic range.

I'm not too concerned about the saw not coming with a riving knife as i'll most likely buy one of these

Do you know what the difference between the Xacta and the Xacta deluxe is? I can't find seem to find a good comparison on the net.

    Thanks,
    Andy

For what it's worth, my understanding was the that the now discontinued TS10L was a copy (or re-badge) of the Xacta deluxe, but without the bottom draw. It adds insult to injury that Carbatec have discontinued a highly rated model and replaced it with an inferior product for the same money.

    Cheers,
    Nick
