Table saw, planer thicknesser, and dust extraction for beginner woodworker
Hi All
Apologies if this gets asked all the time.
I'm new to woodworking and after having done a couple of courses with Damion Fauser in Queensland I am keen to continue this as a hobby and am looking to purchase a table saw and planer/thicknesser in the next couple months. I'm setting aside a budget of approx $4k to $5k for both and was hoping to get some advice/feedback on those items that have good performance/reviews.
Currently on the planer/thicknesser front i have been looking at the following:
- Carbatec 10" Combination Planer Thicknesser with Helical Cutterhead | Carbatec
- 10" Woodman Combination Planer / Thicknesser with Shear Cut Helical Head - Gregory Machinery
- https://www.timbecon.com.au/10in-lif...ination-planer
And on the table saw front, i have been looking at:
- Laguna Fusion F1 Tablesaw - Gregory Machinery
- https://www.carbatec.com.au/carbatec...o-complete-kit
In addition to these, i would need a dust extractor which i havent even looked into as yet, so any tips on this would be great.
Thanks all in advance

Have you considered second-hand? You can often get many more/better tools for the same money.

Thanks.
More than happy to go second hand, just a little unsure of what exactly to look for. For the planer thicknesser would be keen to get an helical head and from what ive read id be hard pushed to find a second hand planer thicknesser with that. In terms of table saw and dust extraction, happy to go second hand if its good quality and performs well.
Any advice is appreciated.

I have the 10" Carbatec Planer/Thicknesser with the helical head and I like it very much, plus I also have the Carbatec Table saw you're looking at and I'm happy with that as well. If you're using a helical head you can get away with the standard 2 hp dust extractor sold both at Carbatec and Hare and Forbes, and as it happens I have the Carbatec one and I'm happy with that too.
New cost on those three items is a little over five grand but I've found that to be a good set up. Of course if you can find good condition second hand gear by all means go for it, but if you're new to all of this it can be hard to know what to look for. That pretty much applied to me so I bought new and as I said I've found my gear to be excellent for my needs.
