    Default Table Saw Woes

    Hi WWF,

in my quest to get increasingly accurate outcomes on my projects I have been spending more an more time tuning my machines and building jigs. On the weekend when I was tuning the fence for my Table Saw Super Sled I confirmed that the wings on my Carbatec Conrractors table saw are not perfectly flat.

the transition from the main table to the wings is perfectly smooth however there is about a 5mm drop from the centre of the table to the end of both wings. I can also confirm that measuring front to back on the wings there is upto a 0.6 degree difference

First question is do I really need to worry about these discrepancies?
Second question is what methods can be used reduce/eliminate these discrepancies?

Hi Damien, there are various threads around on tuning contractor saws. I did a quick search and found several:

Tune-Up Your Tablesaw: Level the extension wings
    www.woodmagazine.com/wood/pdf/delta/ds-038free.pdf‎

And if you can find it I think the Kelly Mehler Mastering your tablesaw video is quite good.

Thanks Fuzzie, some good stuff there.

i couldn't open the PDF link and only found a snipet of Kelly's video however it did look very good.

just got back from Bunnings after purchasing the required Feeler gauge. now I just need to find some metal shims and I will give it a crack.

Not sure about the woodmagazine server but as it happens the doc is still in my browser cache so I've attached it to this thread. Should be OK with copyright as it is a free download.

As far as shims go I have used softdrink cans. You can easily open them up and cut strips from them with scissors.

Great idea. I was racking my brain last night think what I could butcher for shims. The best I had come up with was washers. Aluminum cans sound like a much better idea.

    thanks also for the upload

Great PDF. I suspect a few nights this week will be spent in the man cave trying to execute these steps.

MY Carbatec table saw had that problem,on mine there are several grub screw where the out wings att. I used them to get the table flat.
There is no mention at all in the installation manual,in fact when I got my TS assembled these grub screws were "over"
    Good luck

    NRB you are a legend.

Popped under the table and noticed the provision for grub screws. Checked the manual and there was no mention of using them to level the wings however there was a mention in the parts list of 8 grub screws being provided.

As I never throw anything out I went through my whole man cave and low and behold after 20mins I found a pack of 8 grub screws. 60mins later and one wing is now perfectly level. Will have a crack at the other tomorrow night.

    Default Perplexed

I have spent about 10 hours this week tuning the saw.

went to test it Thursday night after I was convinced it should now cut perfectly but discovered that the pulley belt was now too loose because of the adjustments, so needed a new one.

put a new one in on Friday night, performed a test cut and checked it against my square. Crooked in both directions!!!!! It appears now to be worse then when I started!!!!

everything appears to be 10 times squarer then when I started so I am totally perplexed as to why it is cutting so poorly
