I agree on the not enough "safety" but at the end of the day he has probably been using it for as long as he has been working and like many "old" guys out there things were different in the past.

Not wanting to be a "that the ways it's always been done" but he looks like he is pretty confident around it.

    Me - I'd use a hand saw.

    Hello Gents,

Recently retired from military service, setting up a small one man (ten kids) shop to make ends meet.

I have been searching high and low trying to determine a floor tool of Ishitani's and there is some good knowledge on this posting that I am hopeful can help me. Ishitani appears to run his finished stock through a open sided power planer that takes off one continuous shaving similar to a finish pass with a hand plane. It appears to take of one very thing shaving, NOT similar to our traditional rotary head planers. Can anyone pm me with what that type of machine is called and whether we can source that type of planer here in the states?

    Thank you in advance!
    Jeff

Just be aware that this is the Aussie woodwork forums, and while there are a lot of knowledgeable folk here, and even a lot of US folk, you may not get an answer to this bit as easily if you were actually an Aussie
