Cannot undo blade on tablesaw
Hello all,
I have a Carbatec 10HB tablesaw, bought new many years ago. After a lot of use, it is now starting to play up for the first time.
The nut with the left hand thread on the arbor and which is screwed against the beleville washer which presses against the blade will not come undone. It is jammed tight against the washer which is now flattened.
With the blade wedged in position with a piece of timber, turning the nut with a long handled spanner makes the whole arbor turn without moving the blade.
Can anyone please tell me how to fix this so that I can change the blade?regards,
Dengy

You might be able to get an impact tool on the nut, maybe an air spanner. My air hose wont reach that far.
I am learning, slowley.

The arbor needs to be locked in this situation. There should be a locking pin on the arbor, to the right of the blade. I'm not sure about the older models, they may have a hole through the table to take a round bar which fits into a hole in the arbor.

Thanks for this, rustynail. While looking for a locking pin or hole, as you suggested, I found that there are a couple of flats on the shaft just to the right of the saw blade, designed to take an open ended spanner with a 29mm opening, and no more than 4.2 mm thick to fit in the space behind the blade.
Very odd size, does not match the hex nut used to tighten the blade on the arbor shaft.
Will chase Carbatec tomorrow, but not very hopeful with this old sawtable
If they don’t have one, can anyone please suggest a way forward?regards,
Dengy

We had similar problem at the Mens Shed on an old donated Table Saw with no arbor locking pin. We took the belt off the blade pulley and were able to get a HD Strap wrench node the cabinet and hold the pulley with the strap wrench and the nut came off relatively easily. To improve the grip of the strap wrench you may look at packing the pulley out with some offcuts of old belt. You may also have to take the top off to get access.

Yes, I remember now! They used to have a thin spanner to fit. Will be hard to find as others have asked for them on the Forum. May be quicker to just grind down an old spanner to 4mm.

On my TSC10HB also bought a long time ago, on the motor side of the blade, the arbor has two flats allowing a long thin bladed spanner to be used together with a spanner on the other side of the blade.
The saw did not come with the spanner but I made one from an old open ended spanner with a fair bit of trial and error until it was right.
There was some discussion a little while back about this and I posted the size in a reply, a search might find this thread and post.
I'm not able to get to the workshop for a few days to help any further as I'm getting ready for the next stage of my liver cancer treatment tomorrow.
Peter.
PS I see others replied as well with the details whilst I was slow in posting.

Look for a cheap 29mm open spanner and make it thinner with a grinder or belt sander. Then keep it as a dedicated tool for the table saw.
Otherwise check ebay, others may have a 29 mm thin spanner that they are selling.

.
My 35 yr old son had open heart surgery today to have a mechanical heart valve fitted. Surgeon said it a successful operation. In ICU now, just waking up from the drug induced rest. Stressful times, eh?regards,

If you want the cheater's way of doing it, this is how we changed blades at my old work....
Place a block of wood on the table behind the blade (but not touching the blade), put the spanner on the lock nut and basically slam it backwards into the block. The nut will stop when the spanner hits the block, but inertia will try to keep the blade and arbor turning backwards; same effect as holding the arbor and turning the nut forwards but you only need one spanner. To tighten the nut, do the same thing but with the block in front of the blade (you'll need to nip the nut up by hand first so it doesn't just spin).

Thanks elanjacobs, but I don't think work for me. With the blade wedged in position, the hex nut, beleville wasjher and arbor all spin together
