Wings of wood to replace steel
I have a Total Tools 12m10a.
Great saw, really love it, but the wings provided irritate the heck out of me. The right one is now in the corner and now has a custom router table with a white melamine top.
The question is this....is there any reason to have metal wings? The left one is a slidey extension thing which sees zero use due to the Incra LS32 rails getting in the way (sold the Bessy fence in the second week). The slider is alminium and marks the timber. It's simply oxidises differently to the iron central top.
Is there any rational reason why I can't simply make a melamine extension of the exact size I need? Make is super stiff, of course. Why are table saw supplied with wings anyway? They seem to be the first things given the toss and replaced.

Not familiar with your saw but can perhaps provide some general comments.
I too have replaced my right hand cast iron wing with a home built melamine table insert framed with pine. With time I've noticed some movement with the wooden frame, perhaps I should have bolted the MDF directly to the table. Generally speaking though I've been fairly happy with it and have noticed no major differences to the way I worked without it.
So, I'd see no reason not to replace your existing left hand wing with another insert, assuming you can get it coplanar with the rest of the TS.
I guess some of the reasons they use cast iron is to ensure flatness and minimal movement over time. Plus it'll add a bit more weight to the machine which should reduce vibration. Another thing is wear over time, less susceptible to scratching, gouging, etc.Annular Grooved Nails....Ribbed for the Woods Pleasure?
