Woodman SB1210 Riving Knife
Having purchased a 10" thin kerf blade for my saw I have now made a prototype 2mm thick riving knife to suit. The blade body is 1.8mm and kerf is 2.3mm. I used an old saw blade, which luckily had a 2mm plate, I had and using the outline of the stock knife I roughly cut around the outline with a metal cutting disc on my angle grinder. I then refined the cut with a grinding disc and finally refined it again using hand files. I am pleased with the end result and it will do as a prototype. The next go I have at it I will take a little more care on the concave side of the curve. I found it a little more difficult to shape with the angle grinder and will have to use the hand files more. Other than that I will give the final version a smoothing, apply primer and a full gloss finish.
Also, in making a zero clearance insert I found it useful in aligning the riving knife as the insert will not easily fit over and slide past the blade neatly if the knife is misaligned. The adjustment required is then much more obvious as it is easy to see where the misalignment is.

Nice job metester. I have a couple of old blades. Never thought to use them as a riving knife.
You deserve a greenie for that. Those were the droids I was looking for.

Thanks NCarcher. I can't take all the credit though! I saw it in another thread on this great forum. I like the idea too. Old blades aren't really good for much. Mine was off a cheapie compound saw I once owned. I knew it would come in handy one day!

Have you tilted your blade to 45 deg and cut through your insert yet. If not you will be restricted to 90 deg. Cutting through at 45 hardly enlarges the width of the slot at all, it just takes out the wood from the bottom of the insert.
Can't recall how I cut the angle on the area where the riving knife goes through.
Good job on the insert and the knife.

Thanks Treecycle. I actually made a few blank inserts and plan to cut a seperate one for common angles and dado widths. The slot on the insert for the riving knife will need to be wider to cater for the 45 and 22.5. I must admit I didn't consider that! Good point!! Back to the router table for a little corrective work!
