Default 1 1/4" spindle moulder cutters?

Hi brains trust, please be gentle as this is my first question. I have a Sicar multi function machine I bought second hand last year and have been very happy with it so far. I have only used the saw and thicknesser and am investigating using the spindle moulder. (Wait another 12 months and I may have questions about the morticer too .) I have been told that I cannot fit a collet to use normal router bits and will need to get the larger ones. My machine has a 1 1//4" arbor and I have been quoted over $900 for a set of cutters form the place where I bought the machine. Looking around today I found a similar set from Hare and Forbes for around $140, but only available with the 30mm hole and Carbatec also only had them with a 30mm hole as well. So here are my questions. Does the $900 sound to be a reasonable price? I assume that the quality would be better, but the difference seems excessive to me. The other option is to buy the one with the smaller hole and get it machined out as the difference is only 1.75mm in diameter. Opinions and thoughts???

    Cheers, Gordon

You can get top hat style reducing bushes. You might have to get them made up though (ie I can't give you a source).

Thank you for your reply, but I haven't had any experience setting up a spindle moulder. The ones I have used previously had the 1/2" collet fitted to take router bits. I'm not sure what you mean with the Top Hat bush. As an ex-fitter and turner, I have an image in my mind but not sure how it could be attached to the current spindle.

Any good machinist can open up the bore to inch and a quarter. I’ve had quite a few heads done to suit my machine. A friend of mine is selling a heap of cutters and collars to suit your size shaft on ebay at present. What exactly were you getting for $900? I see the set you refer to, is adequate to start with, and you can add profiles as you need them. Getting one of those heads bored out is a straightforward, $50 job, so you’ll have $682 left to buy more cuttersets.

Your local saw doctor should be able to do it as well. I'd offer, but it's a long way to Melbourne

That won't help...he needs to go bigger, not smaller

For that sort of money it might be worth buying from the US.

for a good set of cutter blocks $900 is about right.

you can get the 30mm tooling and have them bored out properly, I have done this with local supplier...

Hi Gordon, These are CMT top hat reducing bushes from Carbatec. I couldn't find a listing for a 1 and 1/4 to 30 mm but a fitter and turner could make his own. CMT may ship international if making your own is not an option. My combination, a Minimax C26 luckily has a 30 mm shaft so i have the Hare and Forbes set. Does the Sicar have a threaded hole in the top of the shaft? I had an old combination with a threaded chuck for router bits like this. Hope this info helps. Owen

My dude. He needs to get a 30mm block on a 31.75mm shaft. You can't use a bush to make a hole bigger. They ain't gonna help here.

Cheers Riverbuilder, $900 set has 14 cutters and the steel hub. My thoughts at this early stage is just that I may not use them as much as the other functions of the machine and the cheaper set would give me a start to begin experimenting. It's good to hear that machining the hole is an acceptable option as I can usually get access to a lathe at my old workplace. I will check out the ebay listings again as well.
    Thanks, Gordon

Hey Owen, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the Sicar only has a centre drill hole in the top of the shaft. I was told that some of the newer stand alone machines have the facility to retrofit the collet chuck but not mine. It would seem that the option of buying the set with a 30mm hole and machining it out is looking good.
    Cheers, Gordon

I'm sure you know this already, but concentricity is absolutely critical to maintain dynamic balance when running. I'd be aiming for a couple of tenths maximum runout when you clock it up in the chuck.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but can I advise you forget the local suppliers and have a look at Whitehill in the UK? Their cutters are as good as Leitz at about a third of the cost, and their shipping ia fast and cheap. All of their heads are available in 1 1/4 bore size, and they all adhere to the current European standards, with limiters.

You can buy cutters in the US for that spindle, of course, but they typically don’t have limiters. I have some, but I have a power feeder. Try Dave at Oella Saw in Baltimore. Fast, friendly personal service, again with cheap shipping. Much cheaper than local suppliers. I bought, for instance, a new Amana rebate cutter with scribers for $160 US.
