    Default Under $1000 Thicknesser Recommedation

    Hi Folks,

I'm in the market for my first thicknesser. Recommendations much appreciated. My budget is under $1000.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I bought this on special a few months ago and it works well. Good value for a spiral head thicknesser with a 5 year warranty and slightly cheaper than the Carbatec equivalent. Can't speak on longevity but I can't see a lot going wrong with it other than a few blunt blades

I bought a very new, still under warranty Dewalt 735 thicknesser with a brand new set of replacement blades for $800

While it doesn't have the spiral cutter head it has 3 straight blades instead of two and two cutting speeds

I'm very happy with it, it leaves a very good finish even on the low speed

another feature is it doesn't require dust extraction due to the inbuilt dust extractor fan, I have mine piped to a dust bag underneath via 90mm pvc plumbing fittings

Look at these two threads, which should hopefully answer all your questions.

I have got my shortlist down to two:

Carbatec Spiral Head Benchtop Thicknesser TH-BX330P

Sherwood 13in Deluxe Thicknesser with Helical Spiral Head

Am I understanding correctly that the Sherwood has problems with supply of the blades?.

I bought one of these Sherwood Deluxe Spiral head thicknessers on the weekend on their October special. They were $958 but are now back up to $1199 unfortunately.

Not sure you can get a 4 edged tct insert helical or spiral head under a thousand although I think Hafco have their twin edged insert HSS helical heads for about 900.

    regards

I also have this machine and I am very happy with it. AWR did a comparison/review with a couple of the "spiral" benchtop models and rated it as good as them.

Did that price include the Helical Spiral Head though?.

Yes, that one. I just finished setting it up and levelling the feed tables.

it was actually cheaper than the normal helix for that weekend only or so I think.

the Hafco one available now with HSS 2 sided cutters is

I do have a 10% discount on Sherwood rigs which would make it about $1079... or should I wait until they come down in price to $959 again?...

Is the Hare & Forbes one a true Helical Head though?.

You may be waiting a while as the general trend of things is up at the moment. Guess it depends on how quickly you need it.

    Honestly I am not sure,

The Timbecon standard spiral uses 26 x 27mm wide presumably square teeth. Presumably front and side edge and a parallel action.

Their helical spiral is 30 x 15 mm presumably 4 edged square teeth.

My guess would be that the Hafco one is the same as the Timbecon segmented spiral one but is offered with HSS teeth or with TCT as an upgrade.

    YMMV.

I would not have paid over a $1000, but that just reflects my budget and bang for buck assessment. I missed the Hafco ones when they were on special earlier but would have been happy with HSS segmented and replaced them with TCT when needed.

I suspect that in general prices will rise due to energy price rises but I am guessing. You could wait for the next EOFY sale and see?
