T-13s
Good evening ladies and gentlemen
I would greatly appreciate all your views about buying a hare and Forbes T-13S thicknesser as I am debating with myself about getting it when it comes on sale this weekend. Currently I have an old ryobi AP-12 which has seen far better days way before I became aquatinted with it.
Im aware that the T-13s is not a true helical head and it only comes with hss cutters , big bonus is it also has a dust collection shroud 🥳. Are there any owners who have this machine and if so what are they like ?
Many thanks in advance Trent

I don't have one of these but just a couple of things about them you haven't mentioned. The cutters are only 2 sided even though they are square. You can get a full set of carbide cutters here for virtually the same price as 10 at H&F. The cutter head is supported by 4 screws instead of the normal 2 on most machines, so this should in theory produce less snipe on the entry/exit ends of your timber as you won't get as much pivoting of the head as the drive rollers run on and off the timber.
I looked at these machines before settling on the Sherwood Deluxe Thicknesser which has the true spiral helical head and is fitted with carbide inserts as standard.
What ever you get I am sure you will be happy with if it has some form of segmented head.Dallas

I looked at the available 12 to 13" 'lunchbox" units and also a Shelix upgrade for my H&F unit with standard 2 knives. I agree with Treecycle's comments particularly the highlighted points above which were the deal maker for me. The huge plus is the noise reduction with the Sherwood unit - sheer bliss.

Hi Trent, I owned one of these for a while. It did a better job than I was expecting for the price, taking very light passes is the go for a light weight machine like this.
I ended up getting rid of it as it was just too loud! (upset my family and the neighbours) and I decided I wanted a jointer as well so moved to a combination unit with an induction motor.

My 8" carbatec jointer uses the same segmented cutter design and it is good, i'm happy with it, but the Sherwood thicknesser with the helical head setup clearly shows the benefit of the helical head.
The t-13s will definitely be an upgrade from the ryobi in cutting performance

i have the H&F thicknesser and found form new its rollers were not the same distance from the bed which caused problems when you wanted to machine multiple pieces of timber at the same time. The problem was relatively easy to fix by adjusting the chain drive .

Dad had one, it was louder than a 747 taking off. Toomnus has it now because he lives in the middle of nowhere so it can’t bother anyone.
There are better options.
