Because that's the easiest place to reach it when in use.

Not really asking why that location. Asking why have the extra switch. Is there some new legal requirement or did the OP request it as an option and if so why? All older machines do not have the two switches. Genuinely interested.

I wonder if that is a requirement on Australian sold machinery to have an emergency stop as you don't see it on international models.

    Mine came with it too.

Yep, almost definitely a legal requirement.

I am not sure about that Elan but others may be able to clarify things.

Mine doesn't have one, but it's quite possible it hails from a time before Aus added another rule to the existing rules because the only thing better than some rules is more rules. Because: rules.

    Here ya go, legal requirement

Legislative requirement, then. I admit I'm not surprised - Hammer is the discounted range for Felder but even so, the E-stop is a fairly blatant add-on with little "engineering" to it. They just stuck it on a plate. Painted, yes, but it's just stuck there.

First time I couldn't start the machine because I'd knocked the e-stop with my knee was a learning moment.

So why is it not on my other machines, one made by the same company? Do other small table saws etc have it?

Beats me... Perhaps the standard off switch was deemed sufficient on the other machines?

The standard is the 2014 revision, so might have been different if your machines are older than that?

Of course that 20A round-pin plug means I have to do a little electrical work before I can fire it up. Ahh, delayed gratification.
Mine has a single push to stop switch which has to be manually reset every time. It appears that the stop switch on this machine is a momentary switch which does not need re-setting at all. It can be seen here. It is interesting that a change was deemed necessary.

Chris, your stop button would satisfy the requirements on its own

Think mine is the same as Chris's: easily operated by a knee in case of severed fingers
