Advice needed on a New Jointer Carbatec CTJ-196
G'day All,
I've just purchased a new Carbatec CTJ-196 jointer (http://www.carbatec.com.au/store/ind...h=180_370_2350 )
I havn't really had much experience using one of these so I'm looking for a little bit of advice.
I've basically just taken it out of the box's and put it all together,
What do I need to set up before i can use it properly?
I've already got the guide fence squared off to the table bed, but how should the feed tables be positioned?
I know the infeed table has to be lower than the height of the blade cos thats where it cuts, but how exactly should the outfeed table be positioned?
I had a little bit of a play, and some of the stock was going over the blade then getting stuck before sliding onto the outfeed table, but i think i may have fixed that by adjusting the height of the outfeed table, The other problem i was finding was that i was getting a little bit of a snipe problem, i'm not use if this is a setup problem or a technique problem.
Any advice on the setup or better use of my new tool would very much be appreciated.Rgds
Rob.

Hi,
The jointer you've just bought is one of the ones I am considering getting so I'd be interested in how you find the machine. Regarding the outfeed table, it is my understanding that it should be set exactly inline with the cutter at TDC (top dead center). Take alook at this link:
http://www.grizzly.com/images/manuals/g0452_m.pdf
its the manual for a Grizzly version which should be similar (if not the same) as the CTJ-196. It goes through the outfeed table alignment on page 22.
What was the supplied Carbatec manual like? - I've heard the're not very comprehensive.
The 'wood-whisperer' at http://thewoodwhisperer.com/ has a good video on Jointers (its number 6 I think)
bye for now,
Paul.

G'day FireGuard,
But how exactly should the outfeed table be positioned? The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.

Thanks for the replys,
Paul - I've had a look at the manual for the Grizzly, and except for a few very minor cosmetic differences it looks like exactly the same machine. with regards to the manual - if you do get this jointer Print out a copy of the grizzly one because its head and sholders above the one that come with it; compared to Grizzly's its only use would be to help clean some of the oil off the machine.
I haven't got the Carbatec manual with me at the moment but it's only about 10 pages long and is basicly a very simplified "How to put it together manual" not really a how to USE it, so far the manual is really the only let down with the machine so far.Rgds

Fireguard,
I haven't been using a jointer for all that long but this is how I have done it.
OK... very basically, do what Tankstand said and set up the outfeed table to exactly TDC of the blade (the highest one if you must). With the motor off put a straight lump of pine on the outfeed table and slowly drag it across the blade, if it just scrapes the blade that should be pretty close.
Now, turn it on and run some timber across. If it "headbutts" the leading edge of the outfeed table as you said earlier, the outfeed is too high, tweek it down just a smidge. If the timber runs over ok but the blade takes a chunk off the end as it comes off the infeed table, the outfeed is too low.
Trial and error I suppose, but I got mine set up perfectly in about 10 minutes, no snipe whatsoever.
Good fun and good luck,
Peter.

G'day All,
Thanks for all the replys, before work today i managed to get out to the shed for a bit of a play, after reading the "Grizzly" instruction manual and from the advice from you guys, it took me all of about 2 minutes and about 4 passes and I managed to set the outfeed table set correctly. Now everything is cutting properly with no "Head Butting" and no Snipe.
Now i just have to build somethingRgds
