Default Advice on thicknesser/ planer combo

    Hi guys,

Looking for advice how good a hammer A3 41 is? So 400mm wide head and spirex style head.

Any other alternatives with similar specs?

    Cheers

    Sean

Have a read through the threads on here, sawmillcreek and the FOG (festoon owners group). Having done the research last year, there is lots of info out there, with very few (if any) people with complaints. I got the a3-31 with silent cutter head and couldn’t be happier.

The real ah-hah moment was the first time I took a 4 mm cut from a hardwood board roughly 280 mm wide, and it never skipped a beat.

You honestly can’t go wrong with them. I’ve had my A3 31 with silent head for almost 7 years now and it’s a joy to use. If I had to complain about one thing, that would be the fence doesn’t stay locked at 90 degrees when changing from jointer to thicknesser. Other than that, it’s perfectly accurate especially with the digital readout hand wheel and of course it’s super quiet.

I plan on getting an A3-41 in the future to replace my 260mm jet machine, I think they look great for me (particularly the nice long bed on the jointer).

But you don’t mention your circumstances, so if you are using it for a living the AD741 with power raise/lower and digital height might be a worthwhile upgrade for quick, precise stock sizing.

I wonder if they did something about this with later models as I had read this before I got mine, so checked mine every time I switched for months and never had it out, so don’t bother checking it any more and haven’t had any out-of-square issues. Perhaps I should check tomorrow just to make sure.

Good luck, by the way there is a second hand felder FB510 with ceramic guides for 4500 ex.gst and an N4400 for 2500 ex.gst on machines4u if you are looking at bandsaws.

    Robland is an alternative.

I had a Robland full size combination machine for 5 years. switched to Felder AD951 for size and silent cutterblock.

you can get silent cutterblock on Robland too.

Mine also never goes out. I check the fence every few months! It would be evident it the workpiece suddenly was out-of-square.

My machine about 4-5 years old.

Fun day ahead for you, don’t hurt yourself moving all that fancy new cast iron! I presume that means they keep them in stock.

What tipped you to the 31 rather than the 41 in the end?

The cost of the 41 was noticeably more and most of the stock I work with will be fine with the 31. If I find I start working wider I will get bigger separate machines. Always a balancing act . Want, $ , space and use.
