    Default Alternative to SilverGlide

So I've got a little bench top thicknesser that requires a lot of SilverGlide. If I don't put a good layer of SilverGlide on before running them through then they tend to get stuck. It's a stainless steel base, so it's not about protecting the machine, it's just about lubrication.

The trouble is, I'm struggling to get hold of any SilverGlide in NZ. Carbatec is out of stock, and overseas options are few, all with hefty shipping.

Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives?

Candle/parafin wax is a traditional lube, and some have even used soap when they ran out of wax. Floor wax will also work but you have to be sure that it doesn't contain any silicone.

I use the solidified cooking oil stuff as it doesn't seem to have any problems with finishes (at least the solvent based things that I use) Have heard about talk -powder -yes baby kinda powder on cast tables -but haven't tried it.

Our benevolent dictator's Trad Wax works a treat. Pretty sure you should be able to get it in NZ.
Just checked, WR Owen Woodturning supplies and Carbatec in NZ

I use it also and "scrub" it in with a kitchen scourer then polish off with a soft cloth. A small amount goes a long way and it will not affect any finish that is to be used later

Yep, always had a candle or a stick of wax sitting on the thicknesser at work. A couple of wide scribbles was all it needed.
Used it on everything; buzzer, thicknesser, spindle moulder, tablesaw, router table...

If I am busy I use Drylube, you can pretty much buy them in all hardware house. not cheap though. $20 for 500g canister? spray like WD40 and thats it.

I think most joinery shops use them as well?

Thanks for your responses folks. I've ordered some paraffin wax so I'll see how I go with that.
