Old Aussie jointer help
G'day guys,
I've been a reader and general lurker here for a while and this is my first post.
I have recently acquired an old 6 inch jointer from my outlaws and i was after a bit of info on the company and the jointer itself and if anyone knows or has some spare parts lying around in their shed... mainly the fence adjustment handle is either missing or didn't come with this brand of jointer.
I have taken a few pics see below, also It came with a 1/2 hp 1425rpm motor. Is this a bit undersized? I'm looking at a 1hp motor.
Cheers!

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the Jointer was made by J&B Gill , Gillbro from Preston.

Looks like you could use a ring spanner on that.
The design is similar to the Woodfast/Hyco 6 inch jointer made here in Oz
Google them or go to the advanced search up the top, Woodfast were the more common.
There should be a post or two with pics of what their handle looked like.

Looks like a bit of work should make it a worker. How is the cutter head? Has it got blades and all the holding screws?
A half horse sounds under powered to me. Most 6'' jointers are at least 1 HP. If I were getting a new motor then I would just go 1.5 HP as the extra cost will be small.
You can make a plywood safety guard to do until you track down a proper one.
With new bearings, sharp blades, new motor and a good clean up it should be good for another life time of work.
Regards
John
PS Just noticed the advice on the plate about using Shell grease so the bearings may only need cleaning out and then grease.

Cheers mate,
yeah the knives are rusty, just like everything else, but with a bit of time I'm sure it'll come good.
There doesn't seem to be much info on the Gillbro brand, I wonder if they were a rebranded model?

Gilbro jointer restoration.
Almost finished.
I have just started with the base that came with it. Pretty happy so far.

I'm a few years late to this thread but wondering how you went with the resto? I've got the same old Gilbro 6" jointer and retainers for the blades are stripped out and I'm looking to repair or replace them, hoping to get some info off an existing operating machine to work out if set screws are tapped into plates on an angle or at 90 degrees? cheers

You might be lucky but b.lashbrook hasn't been logged on since Sept 2018. Maybe he will still get emails from his thread.

G’day guys, 2018, crikey its been a while then. Yeah I’ve finished the resto, it’s working well. I’ll check the screws when i can get down to the shed.
The resto was a piece of cake. I replaced the bearings with new sealed bearings, new motor and belt and it works a treat.
Cheers
Bryson.

Here's my old machine, prior to stripping down and repainting. Looks very similar to yours Bryson. Next step is cleaning up the head and the retainers for the cutters.
